The Strumica Carnival (Струмички Карневал) is an annual masked celebration held in Strumica, in the southeastern part of North Macedonia. It’s one of the most important and oldest carnival traditions in the country, drawing both locals and international visitors every year.
📍 When & Where
The carnival usually takes place in March, during the days leading up to the Orthodox Easter Lent, known locally as Trimeri days — a period that corresponds with Clean Monday and the start of the fasting period before Easter.
🎭 What Makes It Unique: History & Tradition
The carnival has deep historical roots — first mentioned as early as 1670 by the Ottoman travel writer Evliya Çelebi, who described masked people running through the streets with laughter, song, and joy.
Though it began as a local folk ritual tied to seasonal cycles and Pagan customs, it over time intertwined with Christian Lent traditions. Today’s celebration mixes ancient ritual with modern festival energy.
🌍 International Flavor
Strumica Carnival has grown beyond local borders. Carnival groups participate from across the Balkans, including Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Bulgaria, and even Turkey — making it an international parade of creativity and costume.
In 1994, Strumica became a member of the International Association of Carnival Cities (FECC), highlighting its importance on the European carnival scene.
🎊 Opening Masquerade Ball
The festivities traditionally kick off with an elegant masked ball where the carnival’s Prince and Princess are chosen — a fun, ceremonial start to the main events.
👯‍♂️ Main Carnival Parade
This is the heart of the celebration. Dozens of masked groups, often with hundreds of participants, parade through Strumica’s streets in elaborate costumes. A jury selects the best masks and awards prizes — a big deal for participants and spectators alike.
👶 Children’s Carnival
Dedicated activities for children are part of the tradition too, including costume parades and performances — celebrating creativity and joy in young generations.
🍲 Community Celebrations
Beyond the parades, there are exhibitions, caricature shows, communal meals like traditional bean soup in the town square, and cultural displays that make the carnival a full social experience.
💡 Fun Cultural Tidbits
Masks & Characters: Costumes range from traditional symbolic figures — like the bride and groom and the devil — to modern and humorous interpretations.
Community Spirit: The carnival is as much about community pride and shared heritage as it is about spectacle.
Tourist Magnet: The event brings thousands of visitors and is one of the region’s signature annual celebrations.
✨ Why Visit
Whether you’re into cultural traditions, costume art, folk rituals, or just love big, joyful street festivals, the Strumica Carnival offers a lively window into Macedonian culture — blending centuries-old customs with vibrant contemporary festivity.
