Jeru the Damaja (nom Kendrick Jeru Davis), également connu sous le nom de D. Original Dirty Rotten Scoundrel, est né et a grandi à Brooklyn, New York, où les événements du quotidien qui l’entouraient sont devenus la source d’inspiration de ses rimes.
Jeru a fait découvrir son style unique, qualifié de « hardcore conscious », au public hip-hop avec « I’m the Man », un titre figurant sur l’album Daily Operations de Gangstarr, sorti en 1992. En 1993, il a consolidé sa place dans le monde du hip-hop en sortant le single désormais culte « Come Clean », extrait de son album légendaire The Sun Rises in the East. Jeru the Damaja a été proclamé le sauveur du hip-hop grâce à sa critique honnête et sans détours de l’état de la musique hip-hop.
