Novitiation and ear wearing ceremony
One of the important ceremonies in the tradition of Myanmar Buddhist is novitiation ceremony and ear wearing ceremony (shinpyu Natha Mingalar in Myanmar term). It is the ceremony to novitiate the boys who are between 8 and 20 years. Girls also participate ear wearing ceremony at the same time.

Deedok falls and blue pond
Deedok fall lays just one hour drive from Mandalay. After leaving the car at the park walk along the narrow and stony lane. 2 or 3 bamboo huts along the way sell local soft drink, snack and coffee. Their another income is collecting sab from wild Almond tree (Bot name - Sterculia Foetida ) in the forest. First 20 minutes is up going then walk in the jungle which is quite flat. After 35 minutes walking start to take the narrow and steep stair toward the fall. June to second week of Oct, planty of water. From November it gets dry and no more fall just enjoy swimming in the blue pond. It will be slippery in raining season because of rocky, narrow and steep route, but nice walking in the green forest to the beautiful fall. If you do not mind for clean dressing room, it is recommendable to bring suite and towers to enjoy swimming in the natural blue pond.

Egg beating festival Sagaing ( စစ္ကိုင္းဘဲဥထုပြဲ)
When a person say about Sagaing, recognize Sagaing Hill which is holy land and also known as modern Bagan. Egg – beating game at Zina man aung Lawka Chantha pagoda festival at Sagaing is one of the lovely old traditions. As other annual pagoda festival, Zina man aung Lawka Chantha annual pagoda festival holds on full moon day of Tapodwe (use to fall in February).
Pagoda festival lasts for 2 days (pre full moon and full moon day) but the folk game of egg – beating lasts for 3 days. Pre full moon day it the best day for pagoda festival. There are several local entertainments such as cane ball playing, traditional game of currying terracotta pots (Sagaing is famous place for clay pot production especially to keep drinking water), local food stalls, and many shops of local products.
Tradition of egg- beating game can be seen only at the Zina man aung Lawka Chantha pagoda festival. There is small stupa with narrow platform in which egg- beating game played from 5 pm until midnight for 3 days. It is really funny tradition and became very popular for everyone. There are more visitors year by year and the annual pagoda festival is well-known today due to the game.
The festival aims to preserve the country’s culture that date back to the time of King Mindon. King’s servants played the egg – beating game in the evening that became popular game of nowadays.
Visitors to annual pagoda festival enjoyed the game. There are several boiled duck eggs sellers with the bamboo basket cover with the bamboo sieve and traditional oil lamp and sing TAYAUK LO- TAYAUK LO means someone is waiting for partner for egg fighting- someone is waiting for partner for egg - beating . Even there is no customer, boiled duck egg sellers have to sing it. Most game players are friends, try the game for fun.
Two players set their boiled eggs against each other on the bamboo sieve and the top one beats the one at the bottom. The player who can crack the egg considered as the winner. The owner of broken egg is loser and has to pay for boiled eggs. Winner gets all boiled eggs that they have used for the fight. If both eggs crack in the fight, the player whose egg is placed at the bottom is considered the winner.
Before beating boiled eggs, players should check the strongest part of the egg under the oil lump
In the year 2019, boiled duck eggs were sold with the price of 200kyats per unit. Some person gambled for 10-15 eggs.
Festival date on Gregorian calendar cannot be same every year as Myanmar celebrate annual pagoda festival according to lunar calendar.

Naga Land Myanmar
Beautiful Naga Hill is part of Arakan Yoma border of India and Myanmar. The Naga Land gets high annual rainfall and naturally covered with virgin forest. Nagas are famous hunters and decent from Tibet – Myanmar ethnic. There are Nagas tribe in Assam and India. There are over 3 million Nagas, 2 millions of them are in Nagaland in India. Naga tribe lives in Virgin Naga land in Myanmar peacefully. It is small population of over 100,000 Nagas live mostly in the northern part of Myanmar near India – Myanmar border. Their small villages are above 3000 – 4000 feet above sea level. They also live around Khantee, Lashee, Lahe and Nanyun in Sagaing division.
Nagas speak dialect that is part of Tibeto – Burman family, which is part of Sino – Tibetan group. There are many dialects as there are many groups in the Naga tribe.
They traditionally cultivate crops and variety of vegetables and hunt for meat.
Originally Nagas are animist. After British arrival most Nagas became Christians. Even most of them are Baptist, they still keep their tradition. They traditionally believe in spirits, local deities and supernatural forces associated with live events. Pan is their traditional ceremonial house with ritual poles, and a big stone slab support by 3 or 4 pieces of stone they call stone table.
The Naga New Year festival is held on second week of January. The main idea of celebrating New Year is to enjoy the feast end of the year and welcome a better year of harvest. During New Year Festival, hundreds of Nagas gather to the place where there is festival with their distinct traditional dress and make amazing traditional dance. Each Naga tribe group has its own distinct style of dance. For hunting dance, dancers hold swords and spears and dance in a circle in an effort to drive away evil spirits.

Mawlamyine - Mon State - Myanmar
Mawlamyine is the capital of Mon State in Myanmar. Formerly known as Mawlamine. Mawlamyine was captured by British and served as their capital in the year 1276.
There are several interesting places around Mawlamyine.
Seindon monastery donated by the queen of King Mindon who was founder of Mandalay Palace is one of the tourist attractions of Mawlamyine. Seindon monastery shows the richest Myanmar wood curving of 19th century friendship between Myanmar and Italy as there are beautiful glass ware from Italy decorated at the floor of inner shrine.
Next to Seindon monastery there is stair to go up to peaceful Kyaikthalan pagoda, sunset time is the best for panorama over Mawlamyine city and Thanlwin River.
Bilu Island just opposite bank of Thanlwin River. The Island is big , several villages such as Ywalut village, Mudon village, Chaung Sone village, Taung Son village are recommendable to visit. Bilu Island can be reached by car from Mawlamyine easily after the government made the bridge. It was funny to visit villages on Bilu Island by small boat in past time. Each village has own specialties that gives the focal points to visit
Winsein tawya, the largest reclining Buddha, Hpaauk tawya meditation center, Zin Kyaik fall, Death Railway museum at Thanphyuzayet, Panga village, Ngwalabo pagoda are highlight to visit around Mawlamyine.
Boat trip between Mawlamyine and Hpa an is also one of the interesting options.
Drive towards Hpa an, Khayone cave, U Hna auk monastery Kayin villages can be visited.
Mawlamyine lies 6 hours drive from Yangon should not miss stopping at Thahtone, Bago and Mon villages.
There is daily public bus between Yangon and Mawlamyine.

Chicken with potato curry
Chicken with potato curry is one of the delicious curries in Myanmar traditional food. Chicken with potato curry is popular menu at every Myanmar traditional restaurant as it is light and not spicy, recommendable dish for foreign visitors.

Myanmar traditional curry does not use ready made curry paste. Fried cut potato for few minutes which makes potato harder in curry.
For chicken curry, fried onion, pounded garlic and turmeric with a tea spoon of cooking oil. When the color change, add fresh tomato cut into small pieces, then add chicken and water and salt. Cook for 5-10 minutes and add fried potato. It is Myanmar traditional way we make chicken with potato curry at home.
Who love masala, can use it as it will make very nice flavor.
Who love spicy, can use red chili powder when you fried pounded garlic.

Myanmar Longyi
Longyi is lower garment for Myanmar lady and Paso is for man. Generally lower garment for both man and lady can call Longyi.
It is popular traditional dress widely wear in Myanmar. 85% of Myanmar still lovely wears traditional. Traditional dress for Myanmar man is longyi and shirt, for formal ceremony such as novitiation ceremony, wedding reception ….use to wear jacket and turban. Longyi for men is cylindrical tube shape cloth about 2.2 meters wide and two and half meter long. Without belt, wear it and make knot in front on the waist. Man longyi pattern is quite simple small square shape pattern or diamond pattern decorated with stars. Man do not use to wear shinning color.
Myanmar lady traditional dress is longyi for lower garment and blouse with long sleeve is for top wear with shawl. Nowadays, most ladies prefer blouse with short sleeve. Longyi for ladies is also cylindrical tube shape cloth about 1.8 meters wide and almost 2 meters long (depend of high of person). There is small black strip at the top of ladies’ longyi. Ladies do not make knot.
There are colorful and different patterns for Myanmar ladies longyi. Wave like pattern is quite common for ceremonies. Longyi both for man and woman produce by handmade weaving and for climate in Myanmar prefer cotton wear. For special occasion, both man and woman use traditional silk longyi. Amarapura Loon Yar Kyaw Cheik pattern, Kachin Manaw pattern, Rakhine pattern are three famous patterns in Myanmar.
If we go back to history of wearing longyi in Myanmar, can see beautiful
19th century wood curving that narrate about Jataka in Shwezigon pagoda compound reflects about the tradition of wearing longyi in the past time.

Inlay Lake and Intha tribe - Myanmar
The most impressive beauty of the lake is nature and tradition of Intha tribe who live on the lake for long time. Intha is a words with two syllables: Inn and Tha, Inn means lake, Tha means son. Intha means son of the lake in Myanmar Lunguage. Inlay has meaning in Myanmar language: Inn means lake, Lay means 4: Inlay means a group of 4 villages on the lake.
12th century there were only 4 villages on the lake. They were originally from Southern part of Myanmar from Tha Htone reached to Inlay Lake with King Alongsithu from Bagan who was well known as The Grate Traveler and donated 5 Buddha Images of Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda. With special permission of the King, most followers did not return to capital and settled down on the lake in group of 4 villages and named Inlay. Ywa gyi ban pon, Nan Pan, Naung Taw and Ywa ma are original four villages of the lake.
