Do you have pre-existing conditions and you are worried about COVID-19?
People with pre-existing conditions might be worried about the impacts of COVID-19. People with heart disease, lung diseases like TB and multidrug-resistant TB, HIV, cancer, diabetes, and other immune system vulnerabilities might be more vulnerable to COVID - 19.
There is no need to panic. Here is some information to help you stay safe!
✅How to prevent COVID 19
Wash hands! Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand wash with soap and water for at least 30 seconds
Social distancing! Try to limit your contact with other people. Maintain at least 3 feets between you and other people at all times. Don’t shake hands!
When you have visitors to your home, exchange “3 feet greetings”, like a wave, nod, or bow."
Don’t touch! Avoid touching your face, especially eyes, nose, and mouth.
Cover your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately to the trash bin.
Avoid travel: Avoid travelling to places where COVID-19 is prevalent.
✅Extra precautions for high-risk groups
- Get a flu shot. It won’t prevent COVID-19, but it will prevent the flu and keep you out of clinics and pharmacies and minimize your risk of contact with others who may be sick.
- If you take medications: Ask your health care provider about obtaining extra necessary medications to have on hand in case there is an outbreak of COVID-19 in your community and you need to stay home for a prolonged period of time.
✅Get ready:
- Get over-the-counter medicines and medical supplies (tissues, etc.) to treat fever and other symptoms.
- Have enough household items and groceries on hand so that you will be prepared to stay at home for a period of time.
- Consider ways of getting food brought to your house through family, social, or commercial networks
- Ask visitors and those you live with to wash their hands.
Regularly clean and disinfect surfaces in your home, especially areas that people touch a lot.
- If someone you live with isn’t feeling well (especially with possible COVID-19 symptoms), limit your shared spaces.
- If you have to go out in public, follow the same preventative guidelines as you would at home.
✅Signs and Symptoms of COVID19
- Fever
- Dry Cough
- Shortness of breath
- Fatigue
Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure.
✅Emergency signs
If someone around you is displaying these signs, seek medical help urgently:
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
- Confusion or inability to arouse
- Bluish lips or face
✅What if I get sick?
- Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention. Call in advance.
- Follow the directions of your local health authority. National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on the situation in your area. Calling in advance will allow your health care provider to direct you to the right health facility quickly. This will also protect you and help prevent the spread of viruses and other infections.
- Stay in touch with others by phone or email. You may need to ask for help from friends, family, neighbours, community health workers, etc.
- Who will care for you? Determine who can care for you, especially if your caregiver gets sick.
