🇲🇲 | 𝗦𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗺𝗮𝗿'𝘀 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝗴𝗼𝗱𝗮, 𝗦𝗵𝘄𝗲𝗱𝗮𝗴𝗼𝗻

Much of the pagoda’s beauty derives from the complex geometry of its shape and surrounding structures, and mesmerizes its golden glow. It rises 99 m on a hill 51 m above the city. The lower stupa is plated with 8,688 solid gold bars, and upper part is plated with another 13,153. The pagoda base’s is 432 m and its height is 99 m above the platform. The top of the stupa, too high for the human eye to discern in any detail, is decorated with 5448 diamonds, 2317 rubies, sapphires, emerald and other gems and 1065 golden bells.

The main stupa of Shwedagon Pagoda is in a circular shape and surrounded by smaller pagodas that form a square at the base; four of these pagodas point directly to the four cardinal points of north, south, east, and west, as do each of the four staircases. There are huge statues of guardian lions known as Chinthes that are posted at the entrance of each of the four gateways. These signify mythical guardians of the pagoda. The images on the eight shrines that encircle the pagoda represent the days of the week, with Wednesday being split between morning and evening, making it eight shrines in total. Worshipers circumambulate Shwedagon, paying homage to each shrine, paying special attention to the shrine representing their day of birth. These and other features lend to the significance of astrology in Buddhism and the pagoda's design. Shwedagon Pagoda is covered in beautiful art and iconography that complement the pagoda's significance in Buddhist history and culture. The pagoda complex features many different temples that highlight previous incarnations of the Buddha and smaller spirits.
