On December 8, France formally handed over a 70-million-year-old Tarbosaurus bataar skeleton to Mongolia, a fossil looted from the Gobi Desert and seized by French customs in 2015. 🦖

The fossil, described as “extremely rare,” was confiscated after it passed through South Korea and entered central France without proper export authorization. A lengthy investigation by French customs eventually confirmed its illegal origin. At a ceremony in Paris, officials signed a formal handover protocol for dinosaur fossils seized by French law enforcement authorities in 2013 and 2015, transferring them to Mongolia free of charge.

For Mongolia, the return is both symbolic and scientific. The government has banned fossil exports and considers all discoveries in the Gobi Desert state property. Many specimens vanished over decades due to looting and the growing global fossil trade. Recovering the Tarbosaurus bataar adds to ongoing efforts to reclaim national heritage and safeguard it for research.

The fossils will be studied, restored, and later displayed in a new museum that Mongolia plans to open. Until then, they will be held under state care after being returned home.
