Zavkhan Trekking Mongolia

Not a bad view to be found. The Altai (seen here in late June/early July) is stunningly varied - just beyond these protected alpine valleys (believe it or not), you'd have to work hard to find a tree or much beyond short grass at all! But the starkness of much of Mongolia has its own beauty, too.

It’s been a long time since John and Jen were both over in Central Asia doing trips so this feels like a milestone! John has just ended an amazing Kaz Expedition, and Jen is just heading out on her third Mongolia ride this season, back to Zavkhan - she just doesn’t want to go home yet! Can’t blame her 😉 What an amazing crew and place. .

Here's a tiny taste of our first Altai trip, led by ZT veterans Anar & Jen. The wildflowers could not have been any more beautiful!! Sometimes it is hard to describe the Zavkhan area - northwest Mongolia is a mountain steppe region, but there are lakes, rivers, sand dunes, forests, mountain passes, everything. As a continental climate, days are mostly sunny and warm, and nights nearly freezing. The pastoral nomads gather, socially, with their gers, in the river valleys for the lushest time of year, and scatter again by September, when the steppe, larch, and birch are already turning golden. One spot left on our 21st September Altai Mountain Horse Trek, including the Ulgii Eagle Fest! September in Mongolia is actually one of our favorite times to ride there - although late September especially CAN look snow dusted (or blizzardy, in the higher mountains...), the steppe and larch trees are golden, the horses are fatter and happy to have the cooler breezes, and the wildlife is starting to come down from the mountains and be more visible. You'll want a burly sleeping bag, for the Altai, but Zavkhan will be a bit milder (nights are still cold!). For those of you looking for that autumn feel but 10-15 degrees warmer, we have space left on our 4th September Zavkhan Classic departure :)

Our amazing local teams are the real stars of our remote trips, but having the right gear helps, too! With this set up, we may be wild camping in different spots almost every night of your ride, but it could feel a little more like "glamping"... sometimes!

We often feature grand landscapes and exciting vistas, but it is really the small moments and details which remain brightest in our memories - and sometimes, looking back, they weren't so small, after all! Holding an eagle, for example? Seems pretty routine in Mongolia...and pretty badass when you get home!

You'll spend plenty of time in the saddle on our trips, but also plenty around camp - for some, this is sacred down time for reading, resting, and bonding with the team. For others, this is the time to document, draw, journal, play games, or learn some local songs. And for those like John, this is the time to hike or ride up one more high ridge in the long, light evenings! What's your favorite camp activity?
