The Naadam races are over, and the dust is finally settling. These two are leaving the chaos of the festival behind for the long trek back to their home pasture. Before the paved roads were built, traveling to Ulgii-City in western Mongolia was a massive undertaking. This public bus was the main way to get there, and the trip took about 72 hours, over 1700km unpaved terrain. This photo shows what the journey used to look like a three-day trek through the open landscape long before the modern asphalt made the trip faster and easier.

In the quiet wilderness of Khovsgol, his presence was steady and sure, our leader, our teacher, and the heart of every step we took on the trail. With his calm smile and unwavering strength, he guided our horses through rolling grasslands and whispering forests, always knowing the way forward. Though a year has passed since he left us, his spirit lingers in this land he loved, in the rhythm of hooves on the earth, and in the stories we carry with us. Whenever we think of our trek, we remember not just the beauty of the mountains, but his warm laughter, his gentle guidance, and the way he made every moment feel like home. We miss him dearly his legacy lives on in every sunrise over Khovsgol.
