The modern Morin Khuur (морин хуур), also known as the horsehead fiddle, is a traditional Mongolian bowed string instrument that has undergone significant modernization in recent decades, both in its construction and performance practice. Here’s an overview of its modern form, features, and context:
1. Structure and Design
The modern Morin Khuur retains the core features of the traditional version, but with refinements that enhance sound quality, durability, and meet global performance standards.
• Body (soundbox):
Traditionally made from wood and covered with animal skin; modern versions may use fully wooden or composite materials for better resonance and consistency.
The body is more precisely crafted to ensure accurate tuning and projection, often shaped more like a cello or violin base for improved acoustics.
• Strings:
Traditional strings were made from horsehair; modern versions often use nylon-wrapped steel or synthetic materials for stability and longevity.
Still maintains two strings, typically tuned a fifth apart (commonly D and A or G and D).
• Bow:
Traditionally strung with horsehair, modern bows may use synthetic fibers and adopt shapes similar to violin or erhu bows.
• Headstock:
The carved horse head (a cultural icon) remains an essential part of the design, though contemporary variations may incorporate abstract or stylized forms.

The Siberian elm (Ulmus pumila) is a resilient tree species native to Mongolia's Gobi Desert. Despite the harsh, arid conditions, it thrives in specific microhabitats and plays a vital role in the desert ecosystem.

The Siberian elm is highly drought-tolerant and well-suited for the dry weather of Mongolia.

Its deep root system allows it to access underground water sources, and its small leaves reduce water loss.

The snow leopard (Panthera uncia) is one of Mongolia’s most iconic and elusive species. Mongolia is home to one of the largest populations of snow leopards in the world, with an estimated 1,000 individuals, roughly one-third of the global population.

Habitat in Mongolia
Snow leopards primarily inhabit the Altai, Khangai, and Gobi-Altai Mountains. These regions provide the high, rugged terrain and sparse vegetation that snow leopards prefer. Their range in Mongolia spans across several protected areas, including:

Altai Tavan Bogd National Park

Khar Us Nuur National Park

Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park

Behavior and Ecology
Diet: In Mongolia, their main prey includes ibex, argali sheep, marmots, and other small mammals.

Solitary: Snow leopards are solitary and highly territorial, with large home ranges.

Elusiveness: They're rarely seen in the wild, which makes population estimates difficult and often reliant on camera traps and DNA analysis from s**t.

Conservation Status
The snow leopard is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN, with threats in Mongolia including:

Poaching: For their fur and bones, or in retaliation for livestock predation.

Habitat degradation is due to mining, overgrazing by livestock, and infrastructure development.

Human-wildlife conflict: As herders lose livestock to predation, some may retaliate by killing snow leopards.

Conservation Efforts in Mongolia
Numerous efforts are being made to protect snow leopards, including:

Snow Leopard Trust and Snow Leopard Conservation Foundation (Mongolia): These NGOs conduct research, community-based conservation, and awareness campaigns.

Community partnerships: Initiatives like “Snow Leopard Enterprises” support local communities with income in exchange for conservation commitments.

Anti-poaching patrols and education programs: To reduce human-leopard conflict and foster coexistence.

The White River (also known as Tsagaan Gol) in Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, located in western Mongolia, is one of the most stunning natural spots in the country. Originates from the Potanin Glacier, which is at the foot of the Tavan Bogd Mountains (Mongolia’s highest peaks). Locals call *Milky River, literally “White River” in Mongolian, referring to the color of the glacier-fed water.
