💧 Back in March and again recently, we had the pleasure of welcoming groups of students from St Nicholas College, Dun Manwel Attard school, Wardija for engaging and interactive sessions at both Chadwick Lakes and GHAJN – The National Water Conservation Awareness Centre in Rabat, Malta. 🌿🌊

The visit at Chadwick Lakes, students embarked on an enriching session at Chadwick Lakes, where they explored the rich history of the valley and the Fiddien Box, while also discovering the unique biodiversity and endemic species found along the scenic trail. 🐦🌼🌳👏

🐾 Chadwick Lakes recently hosted students from Kullegg San Nikola, Skola Primarja Anton Agius, Rabat for an engaging session held by our dedicated educators from Ghajn on local wildlife and history. Fieldwork wrapped up the day, with students identifying species using special handbooks. A fresh take on learning in nature.🌱

The Common Elder, or Is-Sebuqa l-Kbira, is a small tree found at Chadwick Lakes. 🌳 It has large clusters of white, fragrant flowers in spring, followed by dark purple-black berries that ripen by the end of summer. The leaves are made up of several smaller leaflets with jagged edges, and the branches are arching with rough, deeply cracked bark.
This tree provides important food and shelter for wildlife, though it is not very drought-tolerant and thrives best in shaded areas with relatively poor soil.

Chadwick Lakes is home to the White Willow, a native tree that thrives along the water’s edge🌳Its greyish-brown trunk can grow up to 30 meters tall, and as it ages, deep fissures form on the bark. The slender, flexible reddish-green branches droop down, making it easy to spot. The leaves are bluish-grey with a silvery underside, turning yellowish-brown in autumn before falling in winter.

The White Willow plays an important role in the local ecosystem by providing shelter and food for wildlife around the lakes.

The Vagrant Hedgehog is a small nocturnal mammal found in Malta and at Chadwick Lakes. It has a pale face and brown spines with darker bands. When threatened, it curls up into a ball for protection. With sharp senses of smell and hearing, it hunts insects, worms, snails, and even small frogs and lizards.

Despite its small size, the Vagrant Hedgehog plays an important role in the local ecosystem by helping control insect populations.

The Great Reed is a tall invasive plant at Chadwick Lakes, forming dense thickets along the water’s edge🌿 Originally from Asia, it outcompetes native plants and alters water flow, disrupting local ecosystems. Growing up to 10 meters tall, it has sword-shaped leaves and feathery plumes that appear in autumn.

This highly flammable plant recovers quickly from fire, making it even harder to control.

The Western Marsh Harrier is a large bird of prey that migrates through Malta and can sometimes be spotted at Chadwick Lakes🦅 It hunts small mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects by gliding low over the wetlands and marshes. Males have reddish-brown feathers with yellow streaks, while females and juveniles are dark brown with lighter heads.
This bird is a vital part of the wetland ecosystem, helping maintain balance by controlling prey populations.

The Greater Water Plantain, or Il-Biżbula tal-Ilma, grows in the shallow waters of Chadwick Lakes. 🌱 This aquatic plant has a fibrous root system and long, stemmed leaves, growing up to 1.5 meters tall. In the spring, it produces small white or pale purple flowers. Historically, it has been used for medicinal purposes, particularly for digestive health.

The Greater Water Plantain plays an important role in the freshwater ecosystem by providing shelter and food for various aquatic species.
