This week was a special one for us, as we have attended our graduation ceremony at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, where we were conferred the International Diploma in Expedition and Wilderness Medicine! 🎓 We have also officially become Members Faculty of Travel Medicine within the college.

What makes it more special is that we are the first two Maltese 🇲🇹 who achieved this feat. 🤗

This marks a significant milestone in our journey, and this achievement reflects our commitment to ensure healthy and safe adventures all over the world! 🌍

The knowledge and skills obtained through the college has inspired us to open our travel clinic, and we look forward to expand our services in the coming months. 💪🏻

A heartfelt thank you to our mentors, colleagues, and everyone who supported us along the way 🙏🏻. We look forward to applying our knowledge and skills to enhance healthcare in expedition and wilderness settings! 🌍⛺🏔️

Happy Christmas 🎅🏻🎄from the team at Ward to World!

We recently returned from a trip to Guatemala 🇬🇹, where we had an amazing adventure including summiting a volcano 🌋, exploring massive local markets , witnessing Mayan rituals 🙏🏻 and exploring Mayan temples in pristine tropical jungles 🌳🐒

As we look back on the past year, we want to express our gratitude to everyone who has used our services. 2024 will always be a special year for us, being the year we have launched our travel health services, and we look forward to a bigger and better 2025 😁

Important notice ❗

We will be unavailable for most of December, so if you are planning to book an appointment with us prior to travelling in December, kindly schedule an appointment in the next few weeks.

We are going to extend our clinic schedule for November to cater for travellers planning a trip over the holidays ⛄🌲

We will be holding appointments at San Gwann pharmacy from 3pm to 8pm every Wednesday. We can offer appointments on other days on request.

MEET THE TEAM #2

Meet Dr Martina Gerada, another one of our attending medical practitioners!

Dr Martina graduated from the University of Malta in 2017 with a degree in medicine and surgery. She is currently completing her specialist training in Anaesthesia, Intensive Care, and Pain Management at the local public hospital. In addition to her rigorous clinical training, Dr Martina earned an International Diploma in Expedition and Wilderness Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in May 2024. She is also a full instructor for the European Trauma Course with the Malta Resuscitation Council.

Dr Martina's expertise is not limited to the medical field; she is also an avid traveller and outdoor enthusiast. Having journeyed to over 40 countries in Europe, Africa, Asia and South America - she has experienced numerous adventures around the globe. Her passion for the outdoors and sports is further highlighted by her certification as a PADI Open Water Diver and her decade-long experience as a handball player.

Beyond her professional and adventurous pursuits, Dr Martina is dedicated to volunteering. She has volunteered with rescued elephants in Petchaburi, Thailand, and recently started participating in the Sea Turtle Nesting season with Nature Trust Malta. Her latest educational adventure was a Polar Medicine Course in Norway, maintaining her commitment to combining medical knowledge with a spirit of exploration.

Dr Martina aims to utilise both her clinical knowledge and travelling experiences to provide comprehensive and evidence based travel advice, in order to safeguard travellers on their adventures. In her free time, she enjoys swimming in her hometown, sipping a glass of wine at sunset, reading romance novels, and spending quality time with her loved ones.

MEET THE TEAM #1

Introducing Dr Jordy Borg, one of the attending medical practitioners!

Dr Jordy graduated from the University of Malta in 2018. He is currently completing his specialist training in Family Medicine, and practices in the Government Health Centres. He completed a Professional Diploma in Travel Health in 2022 at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. He has also recently completed an International Diploma in Expedition and Wilderness Medicine with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in May 2024.

He is also an instructor in Basic Life Support, and works as a medical doctor with the Malta Football Association.

Apart from his clinical background, he also has extensive experience outdoors. He completed the Duke of Edinburgh International Award in 2019 and is a registered leader with the San Gwann Scout Group. He is also a certified PADI Open Water Diver.

Dr Jordy looks forward to empowering travellers venturing abroad with this new service. Prevention is better than cure, and he believes that most adventures can be enjoyed safely by taking basic precautions, good planning and preparation, as well as keeping up to date with immunisations.

When not on duty, he enjoys camping trips, hiking and cooking.

Last week, Jordy and Martina attended their final residential week in Morocco 🇲🇦, as part of their Diploma in Expedition and Wilderness Medicine ⚕️.

Throughout the week, they gained experience trekking at altitude in the Atlas mountains ⛰️, and also camping for a few days in the Agafay desert 🏜️.

They also practiced and were assessed on various skills related to mountain and desert environments, such as mountain trek route planning 🧭, managing a casualty in remote environments 🦺, navigating through steep terrain 🗺️, ropework skills 🪢, shelter building ⛺, rescue signalling 🆘, water collection and purification 💧and vehicle extractions 🚗.

This marked the completion of the Diploma - making Jordy and Martina the first qualified expedition medics from Malta! 🎉

Throughout the course they experienced being a medic and were assessed on their skills in different environments - including desert and polar environments, mountainous and high altitude, marine environments and tropical forests.

They look forward to utilise the knowledge, skills and resources gained from the Diploma to continue helping travellers embark on safe adventures! 💪🏻
