🎭 Today We Kick Off the Carnival Weekend! 🎉

Let’s take a look at Carnival back in the day!

Carnival on the Maltese Islands is a centuries-old tradition, dating back to 1535 when Grand Master De Ponte introduced the celebrations. Originally, it was the last big feast before the sacrifices of Lent, filled with grand tournaments, masked balls, and extravagant pageants. By 1730, the first floats made their debut, parading behind the Grand Master's carriage, adding even more color and festivity to the islands. Moreover, 'il-Qarċilla', a Maltese poetic farce, was an integral part of Carnival celebrations in Valletta. In this performance, a man portraying a notary would recite a marital contract in verse, filled with satire and humor, to two youngsters acting as a bride and groom.

Today, both Malta and Gozo burst with lively parades, vibrant costumes, floats and energetic dances, while Nadur in Gozo takes on a wilder, more mysterious twist. Il-Qarċilla made a return in 2014 and continues to be performed in Valletta.

Carnival on the Maltese Islands is definitely a must-visit experience for everyone!
