This weekend, the feast of the Visitation is being celebrated in the village of Għarb, and with it comes one of Gozo’s most unique traditions 🌸

A highlight of the occasion is the Infiorata – a beautiful floral carpet made entirely of petals laid out on the church parvis. The designs often reflect religious or local themes, creating a fitting setting for the evening procession of the Visitation statue.

The floral carpet is usually completed on the Sunday afternoon of the feast (typically held on the first Sunday of July), just before the solemn procession begins – which then passes directly over the carpet.

Introduced in 2003 as part of Għarb’s twinning with Gerano, Italy, this tradition was inspired by 17th-century flower carpets created in the Italian town.

Completed just last year, the Neo-Byzantine Adoration Chapel at St. George’s Basilica in Victoria is the result of over two decades of work.

The project began in 2002 and was officially inaugurated in 2023, just ahead of the Jubilee of Hope 2025 🕊️

Designed by architect Vincent Centorrino, the chapel features intricate mosaic iconography, detailed marble and stone work, and a silver tabernacle inspired by a historic pyx discovered near the basilica in the 19th century.

Many skilled workers and volunteers contributed over the years to bring this sacred space to life - a chapel built for quiet prayer, reflection, and beauty in the heart of Gozo 🙏

When visiting the basilica, make sure to stop by the chapel, located to the right of the main altar.
