The history of Port Louis goes back to the 17th century by Dutch mariners who named it Noordt Wester Haven. In 1736 the French took possession of the island and renamed the city after French King Louis XV. Port Louis was used as a port of call for ships on their passage between Asia and Europe to go around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa...

Did you know: The Mauritian sculptor Prosper d'Épinay (1836–1914) created the bronze statue of his father Adrien d'Épinay which was unveiled on 26 September 1866 in the French East India Company garden at Port-Louis.
