On Monday 25 May 2026, around 80 stakeholders from Government institutions, parastatal bodies, the private sector, NGOs and civil society came together for a multi-stakeholder workshop under the UNDP/GEF Sustainable Land Management (SLM) Project to discuss pathways for strengthening the legal and institutional framework for Environmentally Sensitive Areas (ESAs) in Mauritius.

The workshop opened with interventions from the Deputy Director of the Ministry of Environment, Mr Rajiv Beedassy, the UNDP Mauritius and Seychelles Resident Representative, Ms Alka Bhatia, and the Conservator of Forests, National Project Director, Mr Poojanraj Khurun, before presentations and discussions facilitated by the Legal Specialist for the initiative.

The workshop highlighted the importance of integrated approaches to ecosystem protection across terrestrial and marine environments, while fostering dialogue on sustainable land use, ecosystem restoration, biodiversity conservation and environmental governance.

Protecting environmentally sensitive areas is essential for safeguarding biodiversity, strengthening climate resilience and supporting sustainable development pathways, particularly for Small Island Developing States like Mauritius, where ecosystems and communities are deeply interconnected. As Mauritius continues advancing its environmental commitments and resilience agenda, collaborative consultations such as these remain vital to ensuring that development and conservation objectives progress hand in hand for the benefit of present and future generations.

The workshop forms part of the GEF-funded “Mainstreaming Sustainable Land Management and Biodiversity Conservation in the Republic of Mauritius” project, implemented by Forestry Services under the ageis of Ministry of Agro Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries in collaboration with UNDP Mauritius and Seychelles.

remains committed to supporting the Republic of Mauritius in advancing sustainable development, strengthening environmental governance and protecting ecosystems for current and future generations.
