Badain Jaran Desert is located in the northern part of Alxa Right Banner, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China. It is the world's third largest desert and the second largest desert in China. The climate in the area is dry, and the landforms are relatively gentle. Dunes, accounting for 83% of the desert area, move at a slower speed. There are dense tall sand mountains in the central part of the desert. There are 144 known lakes, including 12 freshwater lakes, commonly known as the "Thousand Lakes in the Desert".
