In the 1960s, an international development survey declared the Maldives unsuitable for tourism. Few would have disagreed; the pristine archipelago was indisputably breathtaking, but with little national infrastructure to speak of, positioning the islands as a world-class tourism destination seemed a far-fetched ambition.
Nonetheless, a handful of like-minded entrepreneurs, namely Ahmed Umar Maniku and Mohamed Umar Maniku set out to build on this vision, hosting the first ever organized group tour to the islands in 1972 and building its first resort in the following months. The success of this initial venture spurred on the brothers and their colleagues, and in 1978, Universal Enterprises was born.
Building upon its successes, the company diversified into numerous sectors – including the launch of Maldives Aerated Water Company in 1983, which was later appointed sole distributor of Coca-Cola Company products in the Maldives.
Today Universal enterprises Ltd (UEL) is a Market leader and pioneer in the tourism industry spanning over 40 years and one of the largest private business organizations in Maldives.
