Maldives Legend X has been named Leading Liveaboard – Maldives at the South Asian Travel Awards 2026, for the second consecutive year. It also marks our fourth straight year of recognition at SATA.

A green turtle lays over a hundred eggs in a nest. Most hatchlings never reach the sea and of the few that do, only a tiny fraction survive the decades it takes to grow into an adult.

Which is part of why a calm encounter like this stays with you. The turtle cruising the reef in front of you didn't just beat the odds once, it beat them every year for decades, on the same reefs we're lucky enough to dive. 🐢

Mantas don't feed like this in daylight.

The whale shark is the largest fish in the ocean, and the IUCN lists it as Endangered. Global numbers have fallen sharply over the last century, and they're slow to recover: they mature late and reproduce slowly, so every individual matters more than it looks.

Which is what makes South Ari Atoll so rare. It's one of the very few places on earth with whale sharks present year-round with many of them juveniles, catalogued by researchers and re-sighted across seasons by the spot patterns behind their gills, unique to each animal.

So when one glides past on a dive here, you're not just seeing something big. You're sharing water with an endangered animal, in one of the last places it reliably shows up. Worth remembering why that's not something to take for granted. ✨

Fifteen years ago, the Maldives did something few nations have: it banned shark fishing across its waters and let the reefs recover.

This is what that decision looks like now. Grey reef sharks patrolling the channels in numbers that stop you mid-descent, not fleeing away from divers, not baited in, just living where they've always lived.

Every channel drift on our itineraries runs through water like this. The sharks were always meant to be the locals. We're the visitors. 🦈
