¿Sabías que los peces globos reciben esta denominación por poseer la capacidad de hincharse, tomando agua o aire, cuando son atacados o se asustan, multiplicando varias veces su tamaño?

El botete o pez globo de aletas punteadas es una especie de esta amplia familia. Se alimentan de corales, esponjas marinas, moluscos y algas. Son peces de mar de clima tropical asociados a los arrecifes de coral y viven entre los 3 y 24 m de profundidad.

¡Puedes encontrarlos al bucear en el Mar de Cortés!

Did you know that pufferfish get their name because of their ability to inflate themselves by taking in water or air when attacked or frightened, multiplying their size several times over?

The spotted sharpnose puffers are a species within this extensive family. They feed on corals, marine sponges, mollusks, and algae. They are tropical marine fish associated with coral reefs and live at depths between 3 and 24 meters.

You can find them while diving in the Sea of Cortez!

Estos peces se parecen mucho, pero…¿sabías que son especies totalmente diferentes?

Ambos son peces cartilaginosos con cuerpos aplanados en forma de disco, adaptados para la vida en el fondo marino. Son animales solitarios y nocturnos, se alimentan de camarones y pequeños peces, son muy interesantes para observar pero de los cuales es importante mantenerse a una distancia prudente!

¿Cómo se diferencian?

Apariencia: mientras que las Rayas Eléctricas (fotos 1 y 2) tienen el hocico corto y redondeado y una aleta caudal pequeña en forma de abanico, el Pez Guitarra (foto 3 y 4) tiene un hocico largo y puntiagudo y una aleta caudal pequeña en forma de látigo.

Defensa: el Pez Guitarra tiene una cola espinosa que puede infligir heridas dolorosas y las Rayas Eléctricas poseen órganos eléctricos que producen descargas de hasta 230 voltios.

🌊 These fish look very similar, but did you know that they are completely different species?

Both are cartilaginous fish with flattened disc-shaped bodies, adapted for life on the seabed. They are solitary and nocturnal animals, feed on small shrimp and fish, very interesting to observe but from which it is important to keep a safe distance!

How can you tell them apart?

Appearance: While Electric Rays (photos 1 and 2) have a short, rounded snout and a small fan-shaped caudal fin,the Guitarfish (photos 3 and 4) has a long, pointed snout and a small whip-shaped caudal fin.

Defense: The Guitarfish has a spiny tail that can inflict painful wounds, and Electric Rays have electric organs that produce discharges of up to 230 volts.

Both species can be seen on our fun dives in Los Cabos. Come and meet them and learn more about them!
