Week two of this year’s Big Animal Expeditions started strong.
Pilot whales, mobula and cow nose rays in crystal-clear water, humpback whales, dolphins… and then two days of strong wind forcing us to slow things down a little. Part of life at sea, and part of these expeditions too.
By day five, conditions finally opened up again.
Calmer weather allowed us to cover long distances and properly resume the search, and the day eventually led us to this curious juvenile Whale shark.
Not one of the giant adult females we often hope for this time of year, but an unforgettable encounter in its own way.
Curious, relaxed, repeatedly approaching the group and staying with us far longer than expected.
A good reminder that sometimes the best interactions come after the harder days offshore.
