For the past couple of weeks, something unusual has been happening.
An unusually large number of bull sharks have been showing up at a local dive site here in Baja California Sur.
Seeing bull sharks around the Cabo Pulmo area isn’t unheard of… but seeing this many individuals, consistently, at a local dive site here is something very different.
Over the past few days, we had the opportunity to photograph nearly 30 individual bull sharks as part of a photo-identification effort. Every encounter, every photograph, and every identified individual adds another small piece to a puzzle we’re only just beginning to understand.
At this stage, we simply don’t know why they’re gathering here, where they’ve come from, or how long they’ll remain in the area.
As exciting as these encounters may be, they’re also a reminder that wildlife should never be taken for granted.
This is a busy dive site visited every day by divers of all experience levels, and the presence of such a large number of bull sharks calls for respect, awareness, and responsible decision-making from everyone entering the water.
This isn’t about fear. It’s about recognizing that these animals are here for a reason we don’t yet understand. Until we learn more, curiosity should always be matched with humility and respect.
For now, our role isn’t to explain what’s happening.
It’s simply to observe, document, and learn.
