Week two of this year’s Big Animal Expeditions started strong.

Pilot whales, mobula and cow nose rays in crystal-clear water, humpback whales, dolphins… and then two days of strong wind forcing us to slow things down a little. Part of life at sea, and part of these expeditions too.

By day five, conditions finally opened up again.

Calmer weather allowed us to cover long distances and properly resume the search, and the day eventually led us to this curious juvenile Whale shark.

Not one of the giant adult females we often hope for this time of year, but an unforgettable encounter in its own way.

Curious, relaxed, repeatedly approaching the group and staying with us far longer than expected.

A good reminder that sometimes the best interactions come after the harder days offshore.

Big Animal Expeditions - Pilot whales.
One of the best parts of these expeditions is never fully knowing what the day might bring.

You leave the beach with a plan, a few target species in mind… and then the ocean decides otherwise.

Two days ago, that surprise came in the form of curious pilot whales.
Slow approaches, repeated passes… the kind of interaction that quietly changes the pace of an entire day at sea.

Despite being regularly encountered in offshore waters of Baja California Sur, surprisingly little is still known about this species locally. Research in the Gulf of California remains relatively limited, although photo-identification studies suggest strong social bonds and long-term associations between individuals.

And honestly, after spending time in the water with them, it’s hard not to feel that there is far more happening beneath the surface than we fully understand.

Another unforgettable encounter from this year’s Big Animal Expeditions 🐋

Big Animal Expeditions - Mobulas

Back in the water with large aggregations of Mobula munkiana, hundreds to thousands moving together through the area.

One of the most studied mobula populations in the world… yet not fully understood.

These gatherings remain one of the most striking, and still somewhat mysterious, natural events we get to witness out here.

A strong start to the season 🙌

Big Animal Expeditions — Week 1

Every season, there’s one encounter we quietly hope for more than any other.

During our Big Animal Expeditions, the possibility of finding mature female whale sharks is always in the back of our minds, because encounters like this are exceptionally rare, and only a handful of places on Earth are known for encounters like these.

This week, that wait ended.

Our first whale shark encounter of the season brought two enormous adult females in the same area, moving slowly through clear blue water and staying with us far longer than expected.

Even more remarkable, one of these females was an individual we had not seen since the 2024 season, a reminder that some of these giants return, and that long-term encounters with known individuals are part of what makes this work so rewarding.

Most whale shark encounters around the world involve juveniles. Encounters with mature females are a very different story, among the rarest life stages to witness in the wild, and still among the least understood.

No one has ever documented a whale shark giving birth in the wild. Even now, much of their story remains unknown. That mystery is part of what makes encounters like this stay with you.

A remarkable way to begin the season and a strong reminder of why we keep coming back 🦈

Our Big Animal Expeditions are underway, and day two already brought us alongside the largest animal ever known to have lived 🙌

Blue whales are always extraordinary.
But this individual made the encounter even more memorable, curious, lingering at the surface, and allowing for those rare extended moments you never take for granted.

Encounters like this are part of what keeps drawing us back out here, season after season.

A strong start to the next two months.
Excited to see what the rest of the season unfolds…

Some days remind you why you chose this place in the first place.

Yesterday, within a few hours, we encountered false killer whales and killer whales, two apex predators that rarely cross paths, and even more rarely on the same day.

After more than a decade exploring these waters, moments like this still stand out.
Not just for the rarity… but for what it says about the ecosystem.

Different species. Different behaviors. Different ecological roles.
Yet all sharing the same stretch of ocean.

That’s the thing about this place, you never really know what’s waiting out there.
And even after all these years… it still keeps us guessing.

Baja never gets old 🖤🌊🌵

We crossed paths again today.
Since December, we’ve encountered this pod again and again.
No matter how many times it happens,
it never loses its significance 🖤🤍

A few highlights from the past few days out on the water.

Peak season is here, bringing us incredible encounters with blue sharks and makos.
The visibility may have dropped and the water turned greener, but the action certainly hasn’t slowed down.

Curious sharks, beautiful interactions, and great groups onboard. Exactly what makes these trips so special.

And as always, the best part… the smiles at the end of the day!

This is Baja California Sur, our backyard, and one of the most dynamic marine ecosystems on the planet.

Encounters like this are known as mixed-species associations, when different cetacean species intentionally travel or interact together rather than simply crossing paths. These behaviors are well documented between dolphins and humpback whales and are thought to be driven by shared movement patterns, feeding opportunities, or simple social curiosity.

Watching hundreds of dolphins weaving through a group of humpback whales is a powerful reminder of how alive these waters truly are.

Baja never stops surprising us.
