Today is International Coastal Cleanup Day! 🌊♻️ But cleaning the beach is about much more than just picking up trash, it’s a direct intervention to save marine life.

Every single piece of plastic, fishing line, or bottle cap removed from the sand is one less hazard that could entangle a playful sea lion, be mistaken for food by a sea turtle, or break down into toxic microplastics in the Sea of Cortez. Plastic doesn’t just float in our oceans, it alters entire marine ecosystems from the ground up 🌊📉

Every year, millions of metric tons of plastic enter marine environments, creating a chain reaction that affects species at every trophic level:

🐢 Ingestion & False Satiation: Marine animals like sea turtles frequently mistake plastic bags for jellyfish. When ingested, plastic clogs their digestive tracts, creating a false sensation of fullness that leads to starvation.

🦭 Entanglement: Abandoned fishing gear (“ghost nets”) and single-use packaging entangle marine mammals, pelagic fish, and seabirds, restricting their mobility and causing fatal injuries.

🔬 The Microplastics: Under sun exposure and wave action, plastic breaks down into microplastics. These tiny particles adsorb toxic chemical pollutants, which are consumed by zooplankton and small fish, bioaccumulating all the way up to apex predators.

Healthy oceans need more than cleanup efforts; they require stopping plastic at the source.
