Did you know there’s a place in Mexico that was never conquered?

High up in Oaxaca’s misty mountains lies one of the country’s best-kept secrets: the Sierra Mixe — a sacred land where ancient traditions are alive, nature speaks, and resistance has shaped identity for centuries 🌿

For generations, the Mixe people have preserved their language, culture, and connection to the Earth — protected by towering peaks and cloud forests that feel like another world.

At Rutopía, we’ve spent time with this community to co-create a journey unlike any other.

In the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing glimpses of this powerful region and the stories that live within it.

Curious?
Stay tuned — you’re about to discover the heart of a land that time couldn’t conquer ✨

Travel changes when you stop just visiting and start truly feeling a place.

In Mexico, the path isn’t just about where you go—it’s about what you open yourself to.

To stories whispered by the wind. To flavors that carry generations. To people who welcome you as one of their own.

This is not a trip.
This is a journey inward, outward, and back again.

Let’s walk it together. 🌱

Vamos juntas, vamos juntos. 🌿

Just 2.5 hours from Mexico City, there’s a forest where time slows down — and stories live in every corner 🌿

In Acaxochitlán, Hidalgo, two of our most cherished hosts, Fulgencio and Felicia, welcome travelers into their world — where food, fire, and tradition weave together into an unforgettable day.

Here’s a glimpse of the journey:

🔥 Traditional welcome dance and offerings to the fire and the gods, asking for good flavor (“sasón”) in the day’s meals.

🫓 Cooking workshop with Felicia, where we helped prepare a traditional meal: tamales.

🌲 Forest walk filled with legends, cultural insights, and stories from Felicia — healer and guardian of ancestral knowledge. And the best part? A fascinating mushroom foraging experience 🍄 — where she explained which mushrooms are edible, what they’re used for, and how they connect to local knowledge and healing practices.

🧵 Visit to Santa Ana to learn about backstrap weaving (“telar”) and meet the women preserving this centuries-old art.

🕯️ Fire ceremony guided by Felicia — an emotional and spiritual moment to reconnect with nature and yourself.

🌮 Dinner around the fire, storytelling, laughter, and rest at the cozy .

🌅 On the way back: sunrise hot air balloons over Teotihuacán and an optional stop to explore the pyramids.

This experience can be lived as a one-day trip — or turned into a magical overnight escape.

✨ It’s kind of amazing how close you can be to Mexico City — and still feel so far from it.
In just a couple of hours, you can step into an experience that’s completely authentic, deeply cultural, and truly unforgettable.

Come with us — and feel what it’s like to travel differently.

🌍 What if tourism had the power to save the planet?

Today, on , we dare to believe that it does.

While rural communities in Mexico face poverty, migration, and environmental degradation, we believe tourism can be part of the solution — not the problem.

✨ At Rutopía, we design regenerative travel experiences that conserve ecosystems, generate sustainable income, and celebrate culture.

Every journey we offer helps protect biodiversity and support local communities.

From mangroves to mountains, we’re proving that travel can heal 🪄 — when done right.

Let’s build a world where tourism gives more than it takes.

Let’s travel with purpose. 💚

This is what regenerative tourism really looks like — and it starts with four young leaders ✨

You asked for the full story… and here it is.
Last week, we traveled to the Lacandon Jungle to strengthen Nikté — a community-led tourism project in Metzabok, Chiapas, created by young people who dream of preserving their culture while creating economic opportunities through sustainable travel.

Together with Juanita — our incredible host and the heart behind this effort — four young leaders joined the journey: Chankin, Noé, Lázaro and Isaac.

What followed was a powerful four-day program designed to build skills, confidence, and a shared vision.

Here’s what those days looked like:

🩺 Day 1: First aid and tour guiding training led by local experts from (Consultora Turística de Chiapas).

🌿 Day 2: A learning visit to the neighboring community of Nahá, where they experienced a fully operational tourism cooperative from the visitor’s perspective.

🧭 Day 3: The Nikté team led their own tour — practicing guiding, managing timing, and receiving feedback — followed by a wisdom-sharing session with the elders to preserve Metzabok’s stories and oral traditions.

🎨 Day 4: A co-creation workshop to begin shaping the brand identity of Nikté, with colors, words and symbols chosen directly by the youth.

We ended the week with certificates, hugs, and the deep feeling that something meaningful had taken root. 🌱

We’re proud to keep walking alongside this community, knowing that what’s being built here could inspire more youth to lead their own path — through tourism that regenerates, not exploits.

This is what we’re here for ❤️
This is Rutopía.

This isn’t your average “taco tour.” It’s a trip full of flavors, markets, rituals, people, stories—and yes, unforgettable bites.

One of our travelers went all in🍴: from tlayudas to aguamiel, from street tacos to tortillas made from scratch on a metate.

This is Mexico through food, through culture, through connection.
