Church of the Holy Cross .

This is the only church in Mexico built by white slave labor. It dates from the Yucatan Caste War (1847-1901), the conflict in which Mayans rose up against the hispanic Mexican overlords. Construction on it was begun in 1858; the slaves were prisoners taken by the Mayans during the war. The town that is now Felipe Carrillo Puerto was known as Chan Santa Cruz and was the heart of the Mayan state that emerged. When it was built the present day church of the Holy Cross (Iglesia de la Santa Cruz) was called the Balam Na (House of the Jaguar) and was a Mayan shrine. Today this former Mayan shrine is a Roman Catholic Church.
