I'm the biggest fish you'll ever meet,
But don’t worry – I don’t eat meat.
I swim near Isla when waters are warm,
Gliding with grace, I mean no harm.
You might snorkel right beside me —
What giant sea creature could I be?

I’m the first to greet the morning light,
Cliffs and sculptures make quite the sight.
A goddess watches from above,
In this peaceful place that many love.

🌺 Ixchel – The Mayan Goddess of Isla Mujeres

Long before Isla Mujeres became a paradise for travelers, it was a sacred place dedicated to Ixchel, the ancient Mayan goddess of the moon, love, fertility, and medicine.

According to Mayan beliefs, Ixchel had the power to control the cycles of the moon and was closely connected to women, childbirth, and healing. She was often depicted as a young woman with a moon-shaped headdress or an older woman pouring water from a jar, symbolizing both life and transformation.

🛕 Isla Mujeres got its name from her:
When Spanish explorers arrived in the 16th century, they found numerous female-shaped statues and offerings dedicated to Ixchel on the island — and named it “Isla Mujeres” (Island of Women).

📍 Punta Sur, at the southern tip of the island, is home to the remains of a temple dedicated to Ixchel. Today, visitors come to admire the cliffs, the sculpture garden, and to watch the first sunrise in all of Mexico — a fitting tribute to the goddess of light and renewal.

✨ Ixchel’s spirit still lives on in the island’s energy, its nature, and its deep cultural roots.

🐢 Sea Turtles of Isla Mujeres – Nature’s Ancient Visitors

Every year, from May to October, Isla Mujeres becomes a sanctuary for sea turtles that return to its beaches to lay their eggs. These incredible creatures have been nesting here for generations, and protecting them is vital for marine biodiversity.

Three main species nest on the island:

Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata)
With a beautiful patterned shell and a narrow, pointed beak, hawksbills are often found in coral reefs, feeding on sponges.

Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta caretta)
Recognized by their large heads and powerful jaws, these turtles mainly feed on hard-shelled prey like crabs and mollusks.

Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas)
Herbivorous and graceful, green turtles are known for their smooth, rounded shells and their preference for seagrass.

🐣 Did you know? After around 60 days of incubation, the hatchlings emerge at night and instinctively crawl toward the sea — a breathtaking moment of life in motion.

🌊 The island's Tortugranja (Turtle Sanctuary) plays a key role in protecting nests and releasing thousands of baby turtles each year.

Let’s do our part by keeping beaches clean, avoiding artificial lights near nesting areas, and respecting turtle zones during nesting season.
