Today the National Campaign of Social Distance officially ends, with Federal & State authorities cautioning citizens that the reopening will be careful & gradual, with restrictions. The Federal government has placed decisions into the hands of the states and municipalities, with weekly updates of the Federal Traffic Light system for guidance.
Our Governor said tourists can resume arriving JUNE 8th, with businesses spending this week preparing preventative measures. See the post about the State's Traffic Light System--Isla Mujeres is in "Orange" status, allowing 40% activity of most tourism businesses.
The Municipal authorities said the beaches will remain closed until the Federal government approves reopening.

Here is what Mexico's coronavirus czar, Dr. Lopez-Gatell, said at last evening's National Press Conference:

Today is the 70th day of the National Campaign of Healthy Distance and I want to give a very, very clear message to the citizens.
The epidemic does not end today, not today, no. To continue mitigating the Covid epidemic, the necessary restriction of mobility in public space is not ending today. It is not over today, the epidemic continues, and it is very important to continue with the mitigation measures, which are based on restricting mobility in public spaces.

Tomorrow, June 1, is not the return to normality, it is not for freely opening of all social, economic and, of course, educational activities. It is not, it is not. I emphasize this because it is essential for society to know that the danger persists and that the entire country is at red light status, with the exception of the state of Zacatecas, which is at orange light status...(He talks about Zacatecas)

The only difference with the conclusion of the National Campaign of Distance is that starting tomorrow, June 1, the provisions that help reduce infections will be in the hands the state governments, with their state health authorities, of course with the support and technical advice of the federal health authorities, and thus, the federal traffic light will accompany the risk identification efforts in the states. I wanted to make that very clear. Susana Distancia is here, she will continue to accompany us for several weeks. (She is the icon for Healthy (Sana) Distancing.)

He narrated the presentation of maps & graphics. noting Mexico has had 90,664 registered cases since the first case on February 28, of which 16,962 occurred in the past two weeks. There have been 275,000 tests of suspected cases and unfortunately, 9930 people have lost their lives. Nearly 71 people of every 100,000 inhabitants of Mexico have had Covid since Feb. 28th.

An update to all of our friends and family abroad. I believe we are on Day 52 of Quarantine here in Isla Mujeres, Mexico. Much of the Island is out of work, restaurants, beaches and bars are still closed. Because of the donations of so many of you we have been delivering food/toiletry and supply bags on a daily basis to many families on Isla. I just wanted to thank everyone who has contributed to help with this ongoing effort. Brian and I call Isla our home now and these people are our neighbors, friends and community. Here are a few pictures, without posting any personal photos.

To our guests And friends and family, who have donated to help feed Isla Families at this difficult time, we say thank you! Today we brought five families food and toiletries, dog food and diapers. Tomorrow we will take more. You truly are Angels. ❤️

We are writing to appeal to our client base to help us feed the most vulnerable citizens in Isla during this unprecedented crisis. Many of you have long histories here on the island and have shared the feelings, moments, laughter and smiles with the people of Isla that make this place so special. Please understand that this is not a request to prioritize Isla Mujeres over your own local communities. This is simply a plea for the benefit of the people of Isla Mujeres who live a very different reality from the lives most of Isla’s visitors enjoy.
Here in Isla, as in some of your communities, gyms, bars, hotels and restaurants have closed and/or laid people off. Construction projects have stopped; homes are not being rented; no one is buying fish from the fishermen; the cleaning staffs have no work etc. etc. 100% of Isla’s economy is based on tourism and has disappeared overnight. The Isla community that makes this place so special is in trouble.
The minimum daily wage is $123.22 pesos ($5/day). Without the tips from the tourism industry, many people will go hungry in another 2 weeks. A group of us on the island has banded together to start ‘FEED ISLA’. We are a group of people, including Mexican Nationals, American immigrants, small business owners and managers, and educators who anticipate the dire need of our neighbors. A small donation will go a long way. For example, for $10 USD a family of 4 can buy 900g beans, 900g rice, 500g lentils, 400g oats, 4 cans of vegetables, 1 kilo corn flour, 860ml oil, 3 packs of pasta, 1.1L vinegar, and 2 soaps.
We have set up an email address [email protected] and linked it to a PayPal account {name:Rob Goth/country:USA}. If you would like to donate and are in need of documentation for tax purposes please IM us.
