32nd Anniversary of the Cross of the Bay – Isla Mujeres
This year, Isla Mujeres commemorates the 32nd anniversary of the Cross of the Bay (Cruz de la Bahía), one of the island’s most meaningful underwater monuments.
The Cross was submerged in 1994, through the initiative of renowned Mexican underwater photographer, ocean explorer, and filmmaker Ramón Bravo.
It stands as a respectful tribute to the people, sailors, fishermen, and members of our community who have lost their lives at sea.
Every year, as part of the traditions surrounding the anniversary of the founding of Isla Mujeres, local authorities and the island community come together in a nautical procession to place a floral offering over the waters where the Cross rests.
Over the years, this special site has also been connected with commemorative dives honoring important figures of the underwater world, including Jacques Cousteau and Ramón Bravo.
For the diving community of Isla Mujeres, the Cross of the Bay represents much more than a dive site. It is a place of remembrance, respect, tradition, and connection with the sea.
32 years beneath the Caribbean Sea.
A tradition that remains part of the heart and history of Isla Mujeres.
