Last week, we had a very unusual encounter: a giant oarfish (Regalecus glesne)

Oarfish are oceanic species that live at great depths, typically from 200 to 1,000 meters. They are considered the longest bony fish alive. It is extremely rare to see them in shallow water; they are occasionally found washed ashore after storms or near the surface when injured or dying.

Their beachings before storms, earthquakes, or tsunamis have gained them a reputation as harbingers of doom, earning them the nickname “doomsday fish.” Legend has it that seeing an oarfish is a warning from higher powers that disasters such as earthquakes are imminent.

But poor guys… there is no real correlation between their appearance and these events! They still remain largely unknown, it wasn’t until 2001 that an oarfish was filmed alive in the wild.

We have spaces for a whale watching tour this Sunday 15th of March 🐋 We will be looking for humpback whales, there has been a lot of them during the past weeks! It will be a shorter tour than usual, focused on whales and learning more about them. We will also look for dolphins and other wildlife 💙Departing from La Ventana in the morning. We had many beautiful encounters recently, join us while the whales are still in the area, before they start leaving to their summer grounds!
Tenemos espacios para un tour de avistamiento de ballenas, este domingo 15 de marzo 🐋 Vamos a buscar ballenas jorobadas, ha habido muchas las últimas semanas, encuentros increíbles. Será un tour más corto que normalmente, especialmente enfocado en ballenas y aprender más sobre ellas.También buscaremos delfines y otros animales💙Saldremos de La Ventana por la mañana. Hemos tenido encuentros preciosos ultimamente, únete a nosotros antes de que se vayan hacia el norte las ballenas!

Last week we had a very special encounter: a newborn humpback whale. He was tiny, very light gray in color, and still a bit wobbly.
Mum was there, and an es**rt accompanied them.

We stayed with the group for a while and dropped the camera to record sound. Soon we started hearing whale vocalizations all around us.

This recording was captured right at that moment. From the boat we could hear the sounds clearly , even feeling the vibrations through the hull.

Moments like this are a beautiful reminder of what a magical place the ocean is. Have you ever heard whales underwater?

What an unforgettable whale season we are having ! 🐋 We’re experiencing an incredible run of encounters with the majestic humpback whales. From breathtaking breaches to powerful pec slaps and the tender moments of mothers caring for their calves, this has truly been our most whale-filled year yet.

So why this surge in sightings? This winter, water temperatures have been a couple of degrees warmer, right within their preferred range. These slightly warmer conditions likely make the area even more attractive for resting, socializing, and nurturing their young.

To learn more about the individuals we’re seeing, we’ve been submitting fluke photos to . By matching tail patterns, researchers can track their movements across oceans and uncover incredible migration stories. We can’t wait to discover where “our” whales have traveled and what journeys lie ahead for them!

It’s encounters like this that remind us how dynamic and connected our oceans truly are.
