Every Spring the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, local Zapotecs celebrate traditional "Velas", which are fiestas in honor of Patron Saints & local heroes. One of the first Velas is celebrated in the shipping port of Salina Cruz in honor of Lorenzo Paulo, one of the XVIII Century Founders of the town. Due to the great business trade the New Spain made with Asia, via Philipinnes, galeons frequently anchored and brought great influences in cut out paper decorations, velvet, shellac goods as well as the colorful flower designs that remain in the beautiful dresses women wear at these fiestas that are famous in Mexican textiles.
