🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Did you know that the Sooty Tern (Onychoprion fuscatus) can spend years flying over the open ocean without ever coming to land? 🌊🦅

During our trip to the Tern Sanctuary in Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, we got up close with these amazing seabirds! Known for their bold black-and-white pattern and loud "wideawake" calls, these pelagic nomads only return to land to nest on rocky islands.

Seeing them raise their chicks right here in the Mexican Caribbean was an unforgettable experience! 📸✨

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿The Mexican Sheartail (Doricha eliza) is endemic to Mexico, and it exists in only two places on Earth: a sliver of the Yucatan coast and a patch of Veracruz about 900 km away. Due to its restricted range and habitat loss, it's considered endangered in Mexico.

🇲🇽El Colibrí Tijereta Mexicano (Doricha eliza) es endémico de México, y solo existe en dos lugares del mundo: una franja de la costa de Yucatán y una zona de Veracruz a unos 900 km de distancia. Debido a su distribución restringida y a la pérdida de su hábitat, está catalogado en México como especie en peligro de extinción por la NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Continuing with our endemic species: meet the Yucatan Jay (Cyanocorax yucatanicus). It's a social bird, always traveling in noisy groups of up to 20 or more.

Juvenile Yucatan Jays have a striking appearance: while their body and head are mostly white, their wings and tail already show soft blue tones, paired with a bright yellow bill, legs, and eye-ring. That pale head plumage lasts only a few weeks after they leave the nest before transitioning into the fully black and cobalt-blue plumage of the adults. In Yucatec Maya, the species is called ch'eel, meaning "blond."

🇲🇽 Continuando con las especies endémicas: aquí tenemos a la Chara Yucateca (Cyanocorax yucatanicus). Es una especie gregaria, que siempre anda en ruidosos grupos de hasta 20 o más individuos.

Los juveniles de Chara Yucateca tienen un aspecto muy particular: mientras que el cuerpo y la cabeza son mayormente blancos, sus alas y cola ya lucen matices azules, todo enmarcándolo con un llamativo pico, patas y anillo ocular amarillos. Ese plumaje pálido en la cabeza dura solo unas semanas después de dejar el nido, antes de mudar por completo al negro con azul cobalto brillante de los adultos. En maya yucateco a esta especie se le dice ch'eel, que significa "rubio".

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿The Yucatan Gnatcatcher (Polioptila albiventris), endemic to Yucatan, is a diminutive species, weighing a mere 5-6 grams, equivalent to the weight of a AA battery. During the breeding season, the male exhibits a distinctive solid black cap, which transforms into a narrow white eyebrow for the remainder of the year.

🇲🇽La Perlita Yucateca (Polioptila albiventris), endémica de Yucatan, es una especie diminuta, con un peso de apenas 5-6 gramos, equivalente al peso de una pila AA. Durante la temporada reproductiva, el macho presenta un gorro negro completo, que se transforma en una ceja blanca angosta el resto del año.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿The Black-throated Bobwhite (Colinus nigrogularis) is endemic to the Yucatan Peninsula. It gets its English name from its call, a clear "bob-WHITE!" Some of the best places to hear one are old henequen fields and abandoned ruins.

🇲🇽 La Codorniz Yucateca (Colinus nigrogularis) es un ave endémica de la península de Yucatán. Su nombre en inglés se debe a que su canto se asemeja a un ruido como "bob-WHITE!". Uno de los mejores lugares para escucharla son los viejos henequenales y ruinas abandonadas.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿The Roseate Spoonbill (𝑃𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑎𝑙𝑒𝑎 𝑎𝑗𝑎𝑗𝑎) is a large, striking bird from the Pelecaniformes order, famous for its vibrant pink plumage and its unmistakable spoon-shaped bill. 🥣
Even though they are a relatively common sight in Mexico and South America, they never fail to grab everyone's attention! They are incredibly social birds, often seen feeding and nesting in mixed colonies.
🇲🇽La Espátula rosada (𝑃𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑎𝑙𝑒𝑎 𝑎𝑗𝑎𝑗𝑎) es un ave de gran tamaño perteneciente al orden de los Pelecaniformes. Es conocida por su plumaje rosado y su distintivo pico en forma de cuchara, que utiliza para filtrar su alimento en aguas poco profundas con un movimiento lateral 🥣
Aunque es un ave algo común de ver en México y Sudamérica, es una especie que siempre llama la atención; son aves sumamente sociables que suelen alimentarse y anidar en colonias mixtas.

🇲🇽 Fue una pajareada diferente, la primera de muchas.

Salimos al campo utilizando el equipo de audio y grabación de Ornitronik, una nueva forma de enriquecer la observación de las aves. Escucharlas con tanto detalle le da otra dimensión a la experiencia.

Estamos muy contentos de comenzar esta colaboración y de seguir acercando el mundo de las aves a más personas.

🇬🇧 It was a different kind of birding, the first of many.

We headed into the field using Ornitronik's audio recording equipment, a new way to enrich the birding experience. Hearing birds in such detail adds a whole new dimension to every outing.

We're very excited to begin this collaboration and to keep bringing people closer to the world of birds.

The Black-headed Trogon was one of the highlights of the morning.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🦩 In Yucatán, American Flamingos have become one of the main coastal attractions and a true cultural icon.
We are incredibly privileged to host one of the largest nesting colonies of the American Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber). Here are 3 fascinating facts about them:
1. The Crimson Phoenix: The scientific name of their family, Phoenicopteridae, is linked to the mythical Phoenix. It was chosen because their vibrant reddish-pink plumage makes them look like they are enveloped in flames.
2. Humble Beginnings: When they hatch, chicks are not pink at all! They are covered in a soft, grayish-white down.
3. You Are What You Eat: They are filter feeders in shallow waters. Their iconic pink color comes from carotenoid pigments present in their diet, mainly found in microalgae and small crustaceans.
Let’s keep Yucatán’s coasts pink, wild, and free! 🌿

🇲🇽🦩 En Yucatán, los flamencos se han convertido en uno de los principales atractivos de la costa y en un auténtico ícono cultural.
Tenemos el enorme privilegio de albergar una de las colonias de anidación más grandes del flamenco americano (Phoenicopterus ruber). Aquí te compartimos 3 datos curiosos sobre ellos:
1. El Fénix de las aves: El nombre de su familia científica, Phoenicopteridae, comparte raíz con el mito del Fénix; se les otorgó este nombre porque su vibrante plumaje evoca la imagen de un ave envuelta en fuego.
2. Inicios grises: Al nacer, los polluelos no son rosados. Su primer plumaje es de un color blanco grisáceo muy tierno.
3. Su color es puro alimento: Se alimentan filtrando el agua en zonas poco profundas. Ese característico tono rosa se debe a los pigmentos carotenoides presentes en su dieta, la cual consiste principalmente en microalgae y pequeños crustáceos.
