Day 2 – The Reef: Improved weather allowed us to fish the reef.

After running out of bait the previous day, we set out with 300 shrimp. The experience from day one paid off, and we were fined tuned machines.

Omar had an outstanding showing, landing 18- and 28-pound black snook, along with a Curt’s pargo (snapper) and a solid grouper.

Josh landed three quality grouper, including the largest of the day at 13 pounds, as well as a cubera snapper.

Ken added one grouper to round out the day.

Day 1 Mangroves: Windy conditions prevented us from fishing open water, so we remained within the shelter of the mangroves.

These areas serve as a nursery for many of the species we typically target in open water. While the fishing was decent, we did not expect to catch large fish.

Smaller fish are quick and have subtle bites, and we went through 150 bait shrimp in two hours, landing only a few small grouper, snapper, corvina, and triggerfish.

Ken did land an impressive 17-pound black snook, which is exceptionally large for the mangroves.

Although day one produced limited results, it allowed us to familiarize ourselves with the equipment and sharpen our reflexes for the days ahead.
