bees be rolling
The bees could walk straight to the food. Instead, some of them kept
leaving the path to roll tiny wooden balls. No sugar waited inside. No
researcher had trained them to do it.
Years earlier, scientists at Queen Mary University of London had
taught bumblebees to roll a ball to a target in exchange for food.
Between those experiments, they noticed something they had not
planned: even when no reward was available, bees sometimes climbed
onto the balls and rolled them anyway.
So the team built a new experiment around that strange choice.
Forty-five individually tagged bumblebees could move through an
unobstructed central path to reach all the sugar solution and pollen
they needed. On either side were areas containing wooden balls—some
fixed in place, others free to move. The bees did not have to enter
either area. Yet individual bees rolled the movable balls from one to
117 times. Younger bees rolled more often than older bees. Males
tended to roll individual balls longer than females.
The researchers tested other explanations. The rolling did not help
the bees obtain food, clear the path or find mates. It occurred in
low-stress conditions, was voluntary, repeated but varied, and used
movements different from practical tasks. In a second experiment,
forty-two bees learned that one colored chamber contained movable
balls while another did not. Later, with all the balls removed, the
bees preferred the color previously associated with rolling
them—evidence that the activity itself had been rewarding.
Scientists cannot ask a bee what joy feels like. They did not claim to
have proven a humanlike inner experience. Their narrower conclusion
was still extraordinary: the behavior met established scientific
criteria for animal play and supports the possibility of positive
emotional states in insects.
We have built an entire metaphor around the “worker bee”—a life
imagined only through labor, efficiency and service to the hive.
Perhaps that says as much about us as it does about bees. We often
notice other beings only when they pollinate our food, produce
something useful or perform a task we can measure.
But these bees stepped away from the direct route to the reward. They
touched the balls, held on with all six legs, rolled, detached and
sometimes came back again. For a few seconds, usefulness was not the
point.
Even in a hive organized around work, a tiny life may still make room for play.
