"We wanted to visit Pátzcuaro on the day of the dead holiday to learn more about it. So, we found Alfredo company's tour that included Tzintzuntzan and Janitzio, as well. We were picked up, travelled to the three cities, and returned to the pick up spot on the same day. The itinerary was very well thought out and it included time to explore around and have lunch. Getting closer... This weekend, we received our fourth (and largest) fall roost report of the year from Mexico!

Pedro Benjamín Dávila Valdés reported over 1,000 monarchs to Correo Real on Oct. 19 with this photo. The report was from San José de la Joya. As the crow (or monarch) flies, that's only about 400 miles from the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, where they could be arriving any day now.

This is the destination of thousands of travelers who come every year to celebrate ***os in Michoacán, Mexico.
But do we know when the island of became famous and became a destination???
There are two important historical moments to know the origin of this world fame that has in Lake Pátzcuaro.
1- In 1934 the construction of a Monument dedicated to Morelos, which was raised at the top and which today we know is taller than the Statue of Liberty in New York, USA.
2- In 1948 the making of a film called "Maclovia" with great stars such as María Félix, Pedro Armendáriz and Carlos López Moctezuma.
This film shows, in addition to the drama of a love triangle, scenes from the of the Dead on island 😉

The monarch population is split into two migratory populations: the larger eastern population, which winters mostly in Mexico, and the western population, which breeds west of the Rockies and winters in California.

With the eastern population being larger, more widespread, and often in areas more populated by humans, we get more reports from the East, so we're always looking for more reports from western monarch observers. What are you seeing near you this time of year?
