Dia de Plaza de Mezcal was born on October 29, 2023, out of the need to create dignified spaces for traditional producers, free from the commercial brands that diminish the value of authentic mezcal. It is also a movement that seeks to defend authentic mezcal, promote small producers, and connect the public with the cultural roots of this spirit.
The movement is organized by the very people who produce traditional mezcal from the heart of their communities. It is fully self-managed, with its own identity, and without institutional support. Over two years, it has brought together “palenqueros” (another word for mezcal producers” and mezcaleros from communities with a deep historical connection to mezcal, such as: Mixteco, Zapoteco, Chocholteco, Ixcateco, Cuicateco, Chontal, Solteco, and others.
