Our new issue of Freehub has landed!
We’re beyond excited to release this edition, a community-oriented book filled with stories highlighting the passion and dedication of outstanding people who are elevating our sport and lifestyle to an increasingly noble ethos.
In our cover story, Freehub’s editor-in-chief, Brice Minnigh, chronicles the self-styled mountain bike culture of Oaxaca, Mexico, where a devoted group of trailbuilders have helped to transform ancient footpaths linking villages in the Sierra Madre de Oaxaca range into stunning singletrack networks that are attracting riders from all over the world. In this feature, photographer Riley Seebeck captures the essence of these extraordinary trails and how they reflect the vibrant culture that permeates this magical Mexican state. A huge congratulations to Seebeck for nabbing his first Freehub cover with an exquisite image of Oaxacan riders Luis “Huicho” Aguilar and Javier Salazar savoring the graceful turns of Corralito, one of the marquee trails in the Sierra Juárez mountains.
With our “When in Roam” feature, veteran mountain bike journalist Nicole Formosa and photographer Anne Keller explore how the organizers of Roam Fest have set a paradigm for radical acceptance with their multi-day bike gatherings focused on inclusion and trust in an environment free from rivalry and posturing. Regardless of your background, you’ll be wanting to attend one of these events, which typically sell out within minutes.
Underscoring mountain biking’s healing power, Brett Rothmeyer’s profile of former professional skateboarder Mike Frazier details how knee injuries, personal hardship, and constant travel have led the vert legend to seek solace in solitary bike journeys across his home state of Florida. For Frazier, mountain biking is the closest thing he’s found to the euphoria of skateboarding in his youth.
These and many other stories, columns and essays—all bolstered by inspired photography and illustrations—help uncover what community truly signifies at its core, and why the cohesiveness of mountain bike culture makes it unlike any other.
