Tierraventura is a small travel agency specialized in Ecotourism and traditional indigenous medicine. We bring you to incredible places in small groups.

tierraventura is a small ecotourism company that has been hiking, touring, trekking, swimming and wandering around in Oaxaca since 1999. The state of Oaxaca has deep pre-Hispanic roots and a wide variety of amazing landscapes in different ecosystems. Yet there are many places here that tourists rarely visit. We specialize in trips to these places. We offer day trips and tours of up to three weeks. Our intention is to show you the “real” Mexico, connecting culture with nature. Among the tours we offer are hikes from village-to-village high in the mountains, trips to see crocodiles and sea turtles at the beach and visits to healers who use ancient traditional healing methods. We are working to develop a sustainable tourism. One that brings economic resources to small communities and gives you the opportunity to discover Mexico in a different way, off the beaten trail.

Laniro means “great celebration” in Zapotec.
What we witnessed was far more than a festival. It was a profound celebration of the living Indigenous roots of Oaxaca’s Central Valleys.
This is the cradle of maize, where some of the world’s oldest sacred corn seeds were discovered in the prehistoric caves of Yagul and Mitla. It is a land of ancient memory—the Tree of Life, the nine sacred caves, the heart of the mountains, and the heart of the sky.

Oaxaca is home to 16 Indigenous groups, with the Zapotecs being the largest community to this day. They call themselves Bë’enaa Za’a—the People of the Clouds.
With immense pride, music, dance, ceremony, and traditional dress, they gathered at the archaeological site of Yagul to honor their origin, their ancestors, and the wisdom that continues to live through the land.
In a world that often looks only toward the future, moments like these remind us that our deepest strength comes from remembering where we come from.
May we all find our way back to our roots.

Oaxaca, on a quiet Sunday morning.
This morning, we walked through the historic center of Oaxaca.
These days, we rarely come down into the city. Oaxaca has changed so much over the years, and during Guelaguetza it becomes even busier, filled with visitors, music, and celebrations.
But early on a Sunday morning, before the crowds arrived, I remembered why I fell in love with this place almost thirty years ago. The colors of the old houses, the food stalls being prepared, the scent of fresh tortillas and chocolate, the flowers, and the quiet rhythm of people getting ready for the day.
I could still feel the original spirit of the Guelaguetza—a celebration of reciprocity, of sharing, of community. Not a performance, but a way of belonging to one another.
That spirit is what I continue to love about Oaxaca. And every now and then, in the quiet hours before the city awakens, it reveals itself again.
