Fue un gusto recibir en Casa Colonial a compradores de varias partes de México para una degustación de los mejores cafés de Oaxaca que se subastaron en la tercera Convención del Café Oaxaqueño. Por supuesto, Reggie se robó el show.

It was a pleasure to welcome buyers from various parts of Mexico to Casa Colonial for a tasting of the best Oaxacan coffees, auctioned at the third Oaxacan Coffee Convention. Of course, Reggie stole the show.

At The Source is the new name for Oaxaca Coffee Tours.

This project has always been about going straight to the source: taking travelers to meet coffee producers, introducing buyers to exporters, and interviewing the people behind what we drink and eat. Calling it “tours” was never quite right.

Coffee is at the center, but my curiosity also extends to food, folk art, and the makers behind what we consume. I’m drawn to craft in all its forms, and the best coffee is exactly that.

Now, it all lives at atthesource.co. You’ll find details for the next group trip, Sept. 12-20, at the link in bio. There are a few open spots left.

I’m always open to collaborations with roasters, producers, writers, and organizations doing aligned work. I’d love to hear from you.

Mezcal, from el campo to la copa

Gracias to Don Reinaldo and Reinaldo Jr. for welcoming us to their family’s agave fields & distillery

We soaked up our mezcal samples with a countryside lunch prepared by the family - sopa de guías, tasajo, pipián, y tostadas made with agave!

We’ll be back to visit again in September 😊 sign ups open now at link in bio

Natural dye & traditional weaving demonstration in Teotitlán del Valle

For one person in our group, it was her second time visiting Bug in the Rug workshop — 10 years later!

Big thank you to the Vasquez family for such a warm reception.

This trip is about more than just coffee — it’s connection to tradition, culture, and the people who shape them.

Spots still open for Sept. 12-20, 2026. Link in bio

It was their first time seeing coffee roasted for most of the group.

With Sarai & Diego of Café SL28, we watched as green coffee slowly transformed — listening, smelling, and adjusting in real time.

We talked about traceability, relationships, and what it means to truly know where your coffee comes from — learning to see roasting as a blend of art & science.

Thank you, Sarai & Diego!!!

______________

Gracias, Sarai & Diego!!!

One of the first stops on our tour is Monte Albán, an ancient Zapotec city built over 2,000 years ago!

Perched on a mountaintop, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers incredible views of the valley and archaeological wonders, both original and restored! Take a closer look at pic 7 and you’ll spot the small stones marking the restored sections.

From cacao to coffee, Oaxaca knows how to do drinks right! ☕️🍫

Today at Café Caracol Púrpura we explored two of Oaxaca’s most beloved beverages. We began with a chocolate tasting, learning about cacao’s long history here as a ceremonial and everyday drink. Yum!

Then we got a lesson in the perfect pour over coffee. We brewed beans that had been processed in three different ways: washed, honey process, and natural process. Each of the processes affected the flavor in a different way and now we know a little more about what each of our palettes prefer in a cafécito!
