Land of Smiles: Our 2-Week Journey Through Thailand
If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to balance the high-energy pulse of a metropolis with the quiet serenity of a riverside oasis, Thailand is the answer. This year, we set off on a "grand adventure" to Southeast Asia, spending two weeks exploring three very different sides of this beautiful country.
Bangkok: Neon Lights and Ancient Sights
Our journey began at the Anantara Siam Bangkok. Despite arriving at midnight after a grueling travel day, the warmth of the Thai hospitality was immediate.
Bangkok is a fascinating study in contrasts. One moment you’re staring up at a sleek glass high-rise, and the next, you’re tucked away in a traditional alleyway with street food vendors and ancient shrines.
The Highlights: We mastered the art of Thai cooking, navigated the "fast and crazy" traffic in a Tuk-Tuk, and stood in awe before the Golden Buddha. Seeing that much history up close is a truly moving experience.
Chiang Mai: Temples, Markets, and Gentle Giants
After the rush of the capital, we headed north to Chiang Mai. Staying at the Anantara Chiang Mai felt like stepping into an oasis—the air smelled sweet, the river views were fabulous, and the atmosphere was pure peace.
The heart of this leg was our visit to a local elephant sanctuary.
A Note on Ethical Travel: Many people ask why we didn't ride the elephants. We specifically chose a sanctuary that rescues and rehabilitates animals that were previously abused. These sanctuaries don't allow riding; instead, they focus on care.
We spent the day feeding these majestic creatures and learning about their place in Thai society. Hershel even got to help bathe a baby elephant—a memory that I know will stick with us forever.
Koh Yao Yai: The Thailand of Postcards
We traded the jungle for the sea, flying to Phuket and taking a boat to Anantara Koh Yao Yai. If you’ve seen those "Instagram-worthy" photos of limestone cliffs and turquoise water, this is where they were taken.
The resort was a dream, featuring:
Family Fun: Dedicated kids' sections with slides and activities.
Island Life: We rented mopeds one afternoon to explore the local village and drove out to a sandbar "spit" to walk along the water’s edge.
It was the perfect place to slow down, enjoy a world-class spa, and reflect on the incredible culture we had experienced.
Why Thailand?
Thailand isn't just a destination; it’s a feeling. Whether it’s the kindness of the people, the spice of the food, or the majesty of the elephants, it’s a place that changes you. If you’re looking for your next "big adventure," I can’t recommend this corner of the world enough.
