Oaxaca is one of Mexico’s most important regions for cacao, where its cultural and culinary roots run deep. Long before colonial times, cacao was valued by Indigenous civilizations such as the Zapotecs and Mixtecs, not only as a food but also as a sacred ingredient used in rituals and trade. Today, it is used in traditional drinks like tejate and rich hot or cold chocolate. La molienda clásica cinnamin, almonds and sugar, then frothed by hand. In Oaxaca, on November 1st, villages surrounding the city and local neighborhoods come alive with vibrant parades through the streets. These processions symbolically guide the souls of their ancestors back to the cemetery after their visit during the vigil of October 31st.

People dress in elaborate costumes and paint their faces so they won’t be recognized by the dead—avoiding the risk of being mistakenly taken to the other world. Music fills the air, and celebrations continue late into the night as communities dance together in this powerful and meaningful tradition.

Join us this October and experience one of the most unique and unforgettable celebrations in Oaxaca, Mexico.
