From the moment we arrive at Los Peines pier, where iguanas bask in the sun, to our voyages toward Los Arcos de Mismaloya or the Marietas Islands, wildlife is all around us. In the air, seabirds often accompany us, sometimes diving skillfully for fish. In the water, we may come across playful dolphins, sea turtles, colorful fish, jellyfish, and more, each adding to the experience.

✨ We are currently developing our Species Sightings Guide, so you can learn even more about the biodiversity that enriches our tours and complements the unforgettable whale‑watching adventure.

𝗔 𝗛𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗖 𝗠𝗜𝗟𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗦𝗘𝗥𝗩𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗜𝗡 𝗠𝗘𝗫𝗜𝗖𝗢

In April 2026, a remarkable event took place in Sonora: the birth of the first wild American bison calf in the region after nearly 200 years of absence.

📍 Location: Cuenca Los Ojos Reserve, Agua Prieta, Sonora
📅 Date: Recorded between April 22–29, 2026
👥 The Herd: The newborn belongs to a group of 29 bisons relocated earlier this year from the Janos Biosphere Reserve in Chihuahua.

This birth marks the success of a reintroduction program aimed at restoring native grasslands and reviving a keystone species essential to the ecological balance of northern Mexico.

🐋𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐃𝐨 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡?

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘁 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀
Breaching produces a splash that can be heard for miles underwater.
It may signal food, danger, or even mating calls to nearby pods.

𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲
Whales may breach to shake off parasites or barnacles.
The impact against the surface helps dislodge unwanted hitchhikers.

𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝘀
Males often breach dramatically during mating season.
It’s a show of strength and dominance to attract female attention.

𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
Leaping out of the water gives whales a brief aerial view.
Sound waves from the splash also help them orient acoustically.

𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘆
Sometimes whales breach simply for joy or practice.
Young whales especially leap repeatedly, building strength and coordination.

🐋 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 — 𝗗𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗕𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝘆

Since 1994, our team has been dedicated to studying humpback whales in Bahía de Banderas through innovative and responsible research methods.

Oceanologist and nature photographer Oscar Frey founded Deep Blue Conservancy, a U.S. 501(c)3 non‑profit organization, to ensure that our work could benefit from corporate grants and tax‑deductible contributions. These donations directly support our research, education, and conservation efforts.

🔬 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬
Our research integrates three lines of work, offering different perspectives to better understand whale behavior:

- 𝑭𝒍𝒖𝒌𝒆 𝑰𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏: documenting individual whales through digital photography.
- 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒍𝒆 𝑺𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝑨𝒏𝒂𝒍𝒚𝒔𝒊𝒔: recording and analyzing songs using advanced digital audio technology.

This integration allows us to study how humpback whales use Bahía de Banderas during the winter months, contributing valuable insights for conservation and education.

✨ The results of our research are transformed into educational programs and marine and coastal conservation initiatives.

📩 To learn more and support our ongoing projects, please visit the Deep Blue Conservancy website. Your tax‑deductible contributions help us continue protecting whales and their ecosystems.
