Today's dawn chorus brought an exciting mix of resident favorites and tropical specialties, with birds calling from the gardens, surrounding forest, and nearby wetlands. From the distinctive whistles of the Black-bellied Whistling-Duck to the cheerful songs of the Happy Wren and the energetic calls of the Great Kiskadee, the morning offered another wonderful glimpse into the remarkable biodiversity that makes San Blas a world-class birding destination.

We are excited to announce our first-ever Birdathon Photo Contest winner: Mark Stackhouse, with his stunning photo of a male Orange-breasted Bunting.

“This photo was taken at the tiny seaside village of Tehuamixtle, Jalisco, Mexico. This species is endemic to Mexico, inhabiting dry forests along the central Pacific coast, and is considered by many to be one of Mexico’s most beautiful birds.
My wife and I found this individual, along with two other males, near midday under a sweltering sun in a tiny patch of shade filtered through dry, leafless branches. The birds were gathered near a small leak in a water pipe entering the village, which created a seep of moisture on the hillside.”

Happy Thursday from Las Brisas 🐦!

This morning we were treated to the sights and sounds of a few Black-bellied Whistling Ducks as they flew by.

Unlike most ducks, these tropical waterbirds are famous for their high-pitched whistling calls, which is exactly how they got their name! Their loud whistles can often be heard flying overhead in the early morning or evening here in San Blas.

With their long pink legs, bright pink bills, and striking black bellies, they’re one of the most recognizable wetland birds in western Mexico. They’re also surprisingly social and are often seen perched in trees, something many people don’t expect from a duck...🦆

One of the things we love most at Las Brisas Birding is that incredible bird encounters can happen at any moment, whether out on the estuary, near the mangroves, or right around the property itself.

The wetlands and lagoons surrounding San Blas provide important habitat for these beautiful birds year-round, making them a favorite sighting for both photographers and birders alike.

Happy Tuesday from Las Brisas 🐦 !

This morning, right off the terrace at Las Brisas Birding, we were treated to one of the true icons of San Blas — the beautiful San Blas Jay.

Curious, intelligent, and impossible to ignore, these incredible birds are known for their loud, playful calls and bold personalities. Their raspy chatter echoes through the trees almost every morning here, often before guests have even finished their first cup of coffee.

One of the most special things about birding at Las Brisas is that unforgettable wildlife moments don’t just happen deep in the jungle — sometimes they happen right off the deck, surrounded by tropical birds, lush vegetation, and the peaceful atmosphere of San Blas.

The San Blas Jay is endemic to western Mexico, making sightings here especially exciting for birders visiting from around the world. They often travel in noisy family groups, hopping through the trees with endless energy and curiosity. A beautiful reminder that in San Blas, nature is always close by.
