The first migratory birds are already in the Neotropics, and as we do every year, we go out to find them.

On our trips, we focus on species like the Golden-cheeked Warbler (Setophaga chrysoparia), considered one of the earliest migratory birds to arrive in Central Texas, both in spring and on its return in the fall.

By following the migratory birds, we conserve the resident birds.

On this trip we encountered a family of Unicolor Jays; these birds move in groups, is a social bird species known for its deep blue feathers.

We were lucky enough to see two juvenile individuals, which means a successful nest. We then saw them foraging among the bromeliads (plants of great importance to the forest and to many birds that rely on them for water and food).

Another bird we encountered was the Blue-throated Motmot, a shy bird that, with a lot of patience, you can spot among the branches, its tail twitching from side to side.

From the last week, birding and nature photography around San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas.

This day we hiked through the mountains in search of the bearded owl. This owl is unique, like every bird on the planet. Some have limited distribution, while others are very common; this particular owl is a nocturnal species endemic to a small region of the northern Neotropics, in the highlands of Chiapas (Mexico) and Guatemala.

Due to the limited information available on the natural history of this species, we are working with this and other resident and migratory species of the Neotropics. Learn about our projects and join us on each trip.

In search of the Pink-Headed Warble. One of the most beautiful birds of the Chiapas highlands. The Pink-Headed Warble is just a pretext for discovering many other birds; for example, in the municipality of San Cristóbal de las Casas, there are around 327 species recorded by birdwatchers.

A Sunday of birdwatching in the high mountains of San Cristóbal de las Casas. A variety of birds this morning: the Pink-headed Warbler, the Mountain Trogon, the call of the Emerald toucanet, and nearly 300 Black-capped Swallows feeding on insects.

Here I share some photos from the session we managed to capture of these beautiful birds.
