On this Earth Day, we want to acknowledge the efforts of those working tirelessly to defend and restore our natural ecosystems, both here in Baja California and around the world.

David Borbón and Ana Maria Peralta are true community conservationists, having planted over 1.5 million red mangrove propagules around their home of El Delgadito, Laguna San Ignacio, across more than a decade of restoration efforts. We visit them on our trips whenever we can to help support their work and vision.

Mangroves are the most important carbon sink in Baja California, accounting for less than 1% of the terrestrial landscape but over 28% of the below ground carbon storage. They also protect coastlines and communities by absorbing up to 90% of a wave’s energy.

We belong to this big beautiful planet and won’t survive without healthy ecosystems for all species, including ours. So on this day and all days, we champion the work of those making this planet a better place for all 💚🌱

Check out the link in the comments for more of David and Ana Maria’s story!

Make it Popeye, but only on one side 💪🦀

Fiddler crabs are common worldwide, including here in Baja California Sur. We found this one with a lot of others in the mudflats of a mangrove ecosystem. The males have extreme sexual dimorphism, using their giant claw to attract females, fight other males, and dig better burrows, but it also functions as a means to help keep them cool in hot environments like ours. Waving it around particularly helps for this, which is what we spotted them doing.

There are fun creatures everywhere here!

Which one of these is not like the other??

Same color palette but in different designs, a royal tern tries to blend in with a large group of black skimmers. Laguna Ojo de Liebre and the surrounding wetlands of Guerrero Negro form critical habitat for shore birds and migratory birds, with hundreds of thousands of individuals using the space annually.

Our tours share this important habitat with you as we also visit the gray whales using the lagoon during their birthing and breeding season.

We recently brought our guests to the Sierra de Santa Martha to see some of the oldest cave paintings in the Americas. Many chose to go up on the trusty mules from the nearby ranching community, adding to the adventure!

The site at El Palmarito is estimated at around 9,000 years old, and is in the ethnohistoric territory of the Cochimí people. Back then, the landscape of this peninsula would have looked very different - much less dry, more inland lakes. With desertification came a harsher reality of living, meaning less stability and thus less time for art.

It was a truly hot day and nothing beat the taste of the cold beer we’d left in the cooler at the trailhead for our return! Extra cowboy points if drunk while still on the mule 🍻

The California sea lion, just a bigger version of “if I fits, I sits.” These ones have found a comfortable (?) spot in Laguna Ojo de Liebre on top of a large metal mooring buoy meant for barges carrying literal tons of salt from the nearby Exportadora del Sal operations.

There are four species of pinnipeds found in Baja California, but this one is the only one we regularly see on both the Pacific and Gulf of California sides of the peninsula.

Kayaking in a desert oasis made of mirrors. Very few people get to know our hometown of San Ignacio this way, and it’s one of the most peaceful places to unwind, watch the birds, and float your worries away.

Come and try it for yourself! 🌴

We love to share all of the beauty of this peninsula, including the tastes! Dates from the desert oasis of San Ignacio, our home, paired deliciously with a fresh goat cheese we picked up from the ranchers in the Sierra de Santa Martha after hiking to the cave paintings. All enjoyed alongside a tasting of some of our favorite wines from Baja California, which, between the Valle de Guadalupe and its surrounding areas, produces 90% of all of the wines in Mexico.

Come and enjoy the tastes of this landscape - each one reflects a part of the history and culture of this unique region 🧀🌴🍷🐐

It’s not every day you get to look a baby whale in the eye, but today was one of those days! 😍🐋👀

We had the most beautiful experience in Laguna Ojo de Liebre this morning, watching several gray whale cow and calf pairs swim in the swell just outside the lagoon’s mouth, preparing for the long migration northward. One of the best days ever for our guests!

We’re on Day 3 of our current trip and having a blast! Yesterday, our guests got a chance to explore the oasis of San Ignacio on foot, winding through the palms and exploring the pools. It’s a path we’ve learned through trial and error over the years of living here and one that we’re so happy to be able to share with others!
