It's difficult to get a good tail picture inside the lagoon because in most places it is not deep enough for the whales to properly dive and show their tail but sometimes you get lucky as this beautiful picture proves, taken by Balvi Vasquez.

This beautiful picture of a classic spy hop was taken yesterday on the 11 am tour by Balvi Vasquez. We don't completely understand this behavior and there are different theories ranging from the whale wanting to see farther and more clearly what is above the water's surface to being able to swallow more easily using the force of gravity but only the whales really know why they do things.

We thank the Vizcaíno Reserve team for doing the first whale count of the 2026 season on the 28th of January. They counted 22 lone whales and 9 peirs of Mother and calf for a total of 40 whales inside of Laguna San Ignacio. This is a very good number for this early part of the season considering the relatively poor numbers of the last 4 seasons. This season is a very good beginning of the 2026 season.
