Today marks 528 years since the issuance of the Alhambra Decree by King Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castile, forcing our Sephardic ancestors to either leave Spain, their home for hundreds of years, or convert to Catholicism. Over 300,000 Sepharadim were forced to make the agonizing choice, with many of them choosing to flee to the safety of the Ottoman Empire, with still many others converting to Catholicism and taking the status of Conversos, but still faced persecution at the hands of the Inquisition.

Don Yizhak Abravanel, one of the great Sephardic Torah Sages of Spain and Portugal and the Treasurer to the Spanish Royal Court, responded to the King and Queens edict with this profound quote that still rings true today on the importance of knowledge, coexistence, and the ability for us to worship freely.
