From our birding tour today in Altavista !!

What a very great day! Out of bed at the crack of dawn to join a bird watching tour with Sayulita Bird Watching Tours, West Mexico. Vidal is an absolutely masterful guide to the birds of this area. We heard and saw so many varieties, but the absolute highlight was a pygmy owl (I forget the exact kind) that sat quietly on a branch and intermittently did its little owl call while we gawked through our binoculars and the hummingbirds swooped around it. Wish I could show you a photo!
Then we carried on down the trail to the most amazing Altavista petroglyph site. I visited it once before maybe 15 years ago, but it was so worth a repeat trip. Ancient petroglyphs all along a boulder strewn creek bed through the Mexican jungle. Lots of varied theories about who made them and why, it seems.

If you are ever in the area I would highly recommend birdwatching with L Vidal Prado and squeezing in a trip to the petroglyphs if you are able!

Masked Duck, females ( Nomonyx dominicus ) Pato Enmascarado, hembras.

In 27 years that l have been interested in birds and wildlife this is one of the birds that l have only spotted on three occasions throughout those 27 years, the first two times in my home sweet home which is San Blas and this recent occasion 25 minutes north of Sayulita, it is definitely a very shy and rare species to spot.

Elegant Quail ( Callipepla douglasii ) Godorniz Cresta Dorada, there are not many spots near Sayulita to spot this incredible species that is endemic to Mexico.

One of the closest spot to spot them from Sayulita is about 35 or 40 minutes away but sometimes we have to travel more than an hour to spot them as their favorite areas are getting smaller and smaller.

Every day in the field is different from the previous one. Today we had a Boat-billed Heron, a species that we don’t spot very often in the wetlands closest to Sayulita.
