In 2009, the tequila industry produced more mixto than 100% agave tequila —by about 1.2 million liters. The categories toggled the lead role back and forth over the next nine years, and 2018 was the last year that more mixto than 100% agave tequila was produced. In 2023, almost three times as much 100% agave tequila as mixto was made, reflecting the explosion in tequila consumer education that Experience Agave was proud to play a small part in.
In 2009, “only” 42.8 million liters of tequila (total, in both categories) were produced. By 2023, tequila production had grown by 155% to over 109 million liters (across both categories).
In 2009, only four distilleries offered public tours, and there were only three novelty tour vehicles in Tequila town (one barrel, one bottle, one classic car), compared to over twenty today. The few hotels were cheap and spartan— there was no Solar de Las Ánimas and no Casa Salles.
Experience Agave created the category of multi-day, educational tequila tourism. For the past 17 years, we have had the pleasure of hosting and educating over 1,000 guests in the Tequila Valley and Highlands of Jalisco. We aren’t flashy, but we endure. This isn’t a trend or a way to make a quick buck: it’s our calling, our passion, and our profession.
