And in an article in the New York Times, an economics professor estimated that nearly half of middle-class workers will be "poor or near poor" in retirement, living on a food budget of about $5 per day.
Moving to Baja could be a comfort saving experience. Cost of living is a great deal less. The US dollar is worth more now than ever before. A valuable source of income is vacation rental in Baja. Often people purchase their dream home and only use it as an escape. An empty home does nothing for you financially and could be an attraction to looters. If you plan ahead and buy or purchase a home with a separate casita, if possible, for the caretaker, you have instantly provided a concierge for your guests. The caretaker can pay all the bills, maintain the landscaping and the home while facilitating repairs and providing a presence to prevent break-ins.
The income derived from vacation rental will provide the funds to pay for the maintenance and the caretaker. The caretaker gets a casita to live in and all utilities-a win-win for all concerned.
Our guests love our caretaker and his wife. We have a loyal following of guests that return every year-partly because of the attention they enjoy from our caretaker and his wife. He is a surfer and totally knows the area. He has been known to take people surfing, viewing the young turtles that make a run for the ocean and providing a surf pole and advice for fishing in front of our villa. His wife fills people in on the whereabouts of the best food in town.
I cannot say enough good things about the value of a quality caretaker.

We all have stories of fabulous investment opportunities that got away. Personally, I would've pursued investments more aggressively, had I the knowledge currently circulating in my skull. Fortunately, we were able to buy two beachfront parcels at $55,000 US each. One we sold for $195,000 US.- that helped us build our Villa videoed here.

We are constantly reminded that life is a short-term lease.There is a one-way ticket made out for us and we have no idea the length of our ride. Or, at what stop we are getting off.
We have options, we can chuck the whole debt-based economy and, instead, begin a new life in an entirely new atmosphere.
One that serves its participants, rather than only the elite.
One where you don't have to pay an arm and a leg for basic utilities,quality medical care and fresh food that has been grown or raised organically.
Baja is calling.

More boomers are seeking walk-able urban spaces for retirement—neighborhoods with communities, places at the heart of things. Medicare doesn't normally cover healthcare costs outside the U.S. Be careful as I was told at a small Todos Santos hospital that I was covered- it costs us $1400 for treatment of bronchitis.

An exception that allow you to use your Medicare benefits internationally. If you are traveling in the U.S. and have a medical emergency, but the nearest hospital is in Canada or Mexico, you can qualify for Medicare coverage at that nearby hospital. Or if you become ill or have an emergency while on a cruise, you can seek assistance from the doctor on board, If the ship is no more than six hours from a U.S. port, you will be covered by Medicare.
However, if you often travel internationally, consider one of the Medicare C through J supplement (Medigap) plans sold by private companies that provide foreign coverage. This is especially true if you relocate overseas, consider an evacuation plan that will cover the cost of your transportation back to the U.S. for treatment. We sign up with Air Med and pay approximately $300 for two weeks coverage.
