Most people know Pondicherry for its colourful streets, French cafés and distinctive blend of French and Tamil culture.

Far fewer know about the ceramic legacy that has been taking shape here for more than 50 years.

In 1971, potters Deborah Smith and Ray Meeker founded Golden Bridge Pottery, introducing high-fired stoneware and training generations of ceramic artists. Their influence helped make Pondicherry an important centre for contemporary studio ceramics in India.

Today, that lineage continues through potters like Ranjita, who trained with them and now creates high-temperature stoneware and wood-fired functional pottery of her own.

For thousands of years, esparto grass has been part of everyday life across the Mediterranean.

Long before industrial materials existed, communities in Spain and North Africa gathered this wild grass and transformed its tough fibres into the things they needed: baskets, ropes, mats, sandals and tools for agriculture and fishing.

Its history stretches back thousands of years, with archaeological evidence of esparto objects dating to prehistoric communities in the Iberian Peninsula.

Then came an unexpected new chapter.

In the 19th century, Britain began importing enormous quantities of esparto from Spain and North Africa. Its fine fibres proved particularly well suited to papermaking, and the grass that had been woven by Mediterranean communities for generations began carrying the printed word across Victorian Britain — including the pages of The Times.

Today, esparto is still growing wild in the hills of southern Spain.
And Sonia is still gathering it.

From her studio near Mijas, she works with this ancient Mediterranean fibre using traditional techniques, transforming it into contemporary baskets and sculptural forms.

Thousands of years. One wild plant. And still new things to make with it.

There’s something about the light in Marrakech.

The city seems to change throughout the day. Terracotta walls move from soft pinks to warm reds and golds. Shadows stretch across courtyards. Tiles, textiles and carved surfaces reveal details you hadn’t noticed an hour before.

It’s easy to understand why so many artists have found inspiration here.

Soumiya is one of them. Trained as an architect and now working with textiles, she brings what she sees around her — light, colour, texture, architecture — into her weaving.

Most of us think of sculpture as something to look at. Sandra invites you to experience it differently.

For her, clay isn’t just a material. It’s the beginning of a much bigger conversation. One that can include herbs, movement, horses, sound, scent, touch, and the people who encounter the work.

Every part of her process is intentional. She digs her own clay by hand, makes her own tools, and has spent years developing her own glaze recipes. But the finished sculpture is never the destination. It’s an invitation to connect with the world through all your senses.

Spend time in Sandra’s studio, and you’ll discover that sculpture doesn’t have to stay on a pedestal. It can be played, worn, touched, heard, and experienced.
