The sleepy town of Sibu comes alive every July with a bustling event known as The Borneo Cultural Festival. This year, this week-long event will again highlight the food, music and dances of the diverse cultural background of Sibu community such as Iban, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu, Malay, Melanau and Chinese.
Dubbed the largest tourism event in Sibu, it aims to promote "Beauty of Ethnic Diversity" within Borneo Island, a city that celebrates its rich heritage with multiracial beliefs and habits to the world. Some of the key attractions lined up include trade shows, fun fair, competition and stage performances. Tourists can have the perfect time to mingle with locals from all walks of life through the participation for this event. It is also a great place to learn about Sarawak's indigenous music and culture.
The Borneo Cultural Festival 2019 is an annual event organised by Sibu Municipal Council. It is a free-entry event. All major hotels are located within walking distance of the event venue.
A total of 20 exciting events and activities have been lined up for the festival, which is set to be an annual event. Among the highlights are a photo exhibition showcasing old photographs of Penang Hill, a star gazing event lead by Professor Dr. Chong Hon Yew, a “Music on Hill” Concert and a variety of talks.
