Keep an eye out for this bird when you are cruising down the Kinabatangan River! While it is a fairly common sight in the area, it can easily be confused with Wallace’s Hawk-Eagle if you are not careful. Fortunately, it loves to call out while flying, making it much easier to lock in a confident identification. Have you spotted one on your river safaris?

This bird isn’t rare, it just requires a little patience. This time, it perched way up high but stayed long enough for us to get views from various angles. Truly a beautiful flycatcher to see after the Sunda Blue Flycatcher. It was making so many calls up there, too!

I need to take back what I said before this Borneo tour! I always told everyone that the Helmeted Hornbill is incredibly rare and usually just a distant, flying glimpse over the Kinabatangan River. Well, Borneo proved me wrong. We started with a long, distant look from about 1km away. Then came a close fly-by, followed by a decent but backlit view. Finally, we hit the jackpot with a super close-up view of it feeding in a fruiting tree. Looking at this prehistoric, dinosaur-like bird up close was absolutely unreal.
这次婆罗洲之旅彻底打脸了我之前的说法。我以前总是告诉大家，盔犀鸟是非常罕见的目标，在京那巴当岸河最多只能看到它们飞过的身影。但结果绝了，我们先是在大约1公里外远眺了很久，接着捕捉到了近距离飞行的画面，随后又看到了一个虽有逆光但距离不远的轮廓。没过多久，终极好运降临——我们在非常近的距离目睹了它在果树上觅食。近距离观察这只长得像恐龙一样的鸟，视觉震撼感简直无法言喻。

It was a very quiet evening, but this bird gave us a great show on our way back to the hotel. It was trying to catch some swifts (based on its flight direction), but I think it still needs to polish its skills a bit.

It is another great start to the day with so many birds around. I heard this one first, and before long, it flew out to give everyone a great view. I have only sighted this rare pigeon a few times here, but I still get so excited every time I see it.

We had a very hot and quiet afternoon session as usual at the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC), but things brightened up when we suddenly spotted this cute little bird. The juvenile looked so adorable and just kept staring right at us.

It happened again! This tiny owl stayed with us for an unusually long time. It was honestly one of the best photography sessions ever for a bird that is normally so light-shy. We could hear it so close, and it perched nearby too. We were so worried it would fly away the moment we turned on the bright white torch, but we got so lucky. It just stayed and stayed for us.
奇迹再次发生！这只小猫头鹰破天荒地为我们停留了这么久。对于这种平时极度畏光的鸟类来说，这绝对是最棒的一次拍摄体验。我们听到它的声音近在咫尺，它停歇的位置也离我们极近。当打开强光手电筒时，大家着实捏了一把汗，生怕把它吓跑，但我们真的很幸运，它竟然为我们驻留了这么长时间。

I’ve been missing out on this bird for the past few months, but when we finally sighted it today, the excitement was completely beyond words. It’s one of those rare Borneo endemics that everyone is searching for. Honestly, I think we have the rain to thank for this lucky encounter.

It was a wonderful morning! While we managed to spot around 16 Bornean endemics, this particular species had been silent and nowhere to be found all day. Just as we were heading to our final stop before lunch, it suddenly flew in from the undergrowth and perched on a low branch. It stayed there long enough for me to wait for the vehicle, grab my camera, and capture the moment while it continued to call from the same tree.
这是一个美好的早晨。虽然我们记录到了约16种婆罗洲特有鸟类，但唯独这一种此前完全没有踪迹，甚至连一点鸣声也没听到。就在我们准备吃午饭前的最后一站时，这只鸟突然从低处飞出，停在了一个较低的枝头。它停留了很久，甚至等到了车辆抵达让我有足够的时间取出相机。它依然待在同一棵树上，为我们鸣叫着。
